Summary
If your spouse or parent is a qualifying foreign resident in Qatar, you may be able to join them through family residence. Their job, salary, housing, and your relationship all affect whether you qualify. Family residence has different requirements from a short family visit.
Eligibility
The sponsor's job, salary, and housing
The resident family member acts as your sponsor. The Ministry of Interior's December 2023 notice lists these conditions:
- Government or semi-government employees: employer-provided family housing or a monthly salary of at least QAR 10,000.
- Private-sector employees: a technical or specialized job and either at least QAR 10,000 a month, or QAR 6,000 plus family housing stated in the contract.
Family and documents
The ministry's English notice limits children to age 25 and requires daughters to be unmarried. Confirm the rule for your child's category before applying, especially for an adult child.
Health insurance is required, along with education records for children aged 6–18. You also need current employment records and proof of the family relationship. Marriage and birth certificates may need official authentication and translation.
Ask whether each family member needs a separate application. Use the residence requirements, rather than the lower salary requirement for a short family visit.
-
Check the relationship and sponsor Confirm who can be included and whether the resident can sponsor you.
-
Check salary and housing Use the rules for the sponsor's government, semi-government, or private-sector job.
-
Prepare and submit the records Gather family, employment, insurance, and required school documents.
-
Complete residence and track renewals Follow entry instructions, note each permit's expiry, and arrange separate work approval if needed.
Family residence requirements differ from a short family visit. Residence does not automatically allow work.
What This Route Allows
If approved, you can live in Qatar for the period and under the conditions shown on your family residence permit. Renewal normally depends on your relationship and the sponsor continuing to qualify. Check each family member's expiry date.
What This Route Is Not
Family residence is different from a visit visa. It does not give citizenship, independent permanent residence, or automatic permission to work. Check the separate work-approval process before taking a job. If the sponsor's circumstances change, ask how that affects each person's residence.
Next Steps
- Confirm your relationship and any child age rules, and check that the resident can sponsor you.
- Check the sponsor's job, salary, and housing against the correct employment category.
- Gather family, employment, insurance, and school records and submit through the correct residence service.
- Complete entry and residence steps. Track expiry dates and get any required work approval before accepting a job.
