Romania Family Residence

Romania Residency
Pathway overview

At a glance

A spouse, child under 18, or other eligible relative may apply to join a resident in Romania. The resident's status must allow family members to join them. More limited rules cover dependent parents and adult children who cannot care for themselves for medical reasons.

Family covered
Spouse, unmarried minor children, and certain dependent parents or adult children with medical needs
Sponsor
An eligible permit holder, including qualifying workers, long-term residents, and protection holders

Summary

Romania’s family-reunification route lets eligible spouses, children, and certain dependent relatives join a sponsor whose residence category supports that family application. The family records and household support must fit the sponsor’s category. Family of Romanian or other EU citizens may use another process instead of this resident-sponsor application.

Check whether prior family approval is needed
  1. Sponsor's Romanian status Identify the qualifying permit or protection category.
  2. Covered relative Document the relationship and any narrower dependency or medical conditions.
  3. Reunification procedure Obtain advance approval where required and prepare the household file.

Families of Romanian or other EU citizens should check their different procedure.

Eligibility

Eligible family includes a spouse and unmarried minor children. Certain dependent parents and adult children who cannot care for themselves for medical reasons can also qualify under Romania’s family rules.

The sponsor needs a qualifying Romanian status, such as a temporary permit valid for one year, an EU Blue Card, an eligible transfer permit, long-term residence, or protection status. The authority must approve the reunification where required.

The family must document the relationship and meet the applicable support, housing, and health-coverage requirements. Marriage and birth records from abroad may need authentication and translation before they can be accepted in Romania.

More about this route

The sponsor’s residence document helps establish which procedure applies, including whether advance reunification approval is needed. The relationship alone does not determine the answer. Family of Romanian or other EU citizens may use a different procedure from the resident-sponsor route described here.

What This Route Allows

A family permit allows you to live with the sponsoring relative in Romania. Permission to work depends on the category and any additional employment requirements. The joining relative should have their own status documented; the sponsor’s residence card does not serve as the family member’s permission.

What This Route Is Not

The approved family category determines the rights granted. Living with a relative is not itself citizenship, and a later change in the relationship or the sponsor’s status can affect renewal.

Next Steps

The sponsor can confirm whether prior reunification approval is required for their Romanian status. The joining relative then needs birth, marriage, and other family records and, for a dependent parent or adult child, evidence supporting that narrower category. Family of a Romanian or other EU citizen should confirm the different procedure relevant to that relationship.
