Summary
A qualifying employer-supported job can allow a foreign employee to live and work in Saudi Arabia, through separate entry, work, and residence approvals. The residence document is called an iqama. Despite its name, a visa described as a “permanent work visa” does not grant permanent residence.
The employer must secure permission for a position open to foreign workers and meet its obligations for the specified permit fees and renewals. Check that your written contract and approved occupation match the job, and obtain any required professional license. Changing jobs or working independently requires the appropriate further approval.
Eligibility
The employer must arrange the required Ministry approval and a work permit for a job open to foreign workers. You need a written contract and the qualifications required for the position. A work permit does not replace a professional license.
The employer is responsible for the work and residence fees and renewals specified in the Labor Law. Medical and identity requirements also apply.
Ask the employer who handles each application and which approvals you need before traveling or starting work. Keep copies of the contract and permits, and check that the approved occupation matches the job.
-
Check the job and employer Confirm that the job is open to foreign workers and the employer can arrange approval.
-
Prepare your records Agree on the written contract and gather qualification, identity, and medical documents.
-
Complete work and residence applications Have the employer arrange entry and work approvals, then the iqama residence permit.
-
Check the approved job Confirm the employer, occupation, expiry dates, and renewal rules before starting work.
The official phrase “permanent work visa” does not mean permanent residence.
What This Route Allows
With the required approvals, you can live in Saudi Arabia and work in the approved job while your permits remain valid. Renewal depends on continued employment and meeting the rules. Changing employer or occupation may require a separate process. Family members need their own residence approval and any required work permission.
What This Route Is Not
This is separate from Premium Residency. It does not let you take unrelated jobs or work for yourself without the required approval. Changes of employer or occupation must follow the official process. Neither the employment contract nor a visa labeled “permanent work” gives you permanent residence.
Next Steps
- Ask the employer to confirm that the job qualifies and that it can arrange the approvals.
- Agree on the contract and collect the required qualification, identity, and medical records.
- Have the employer arrange work and entry approvals, then complete the iqama residence process.
- Before starting work, check the approved employer, occupation, expiry dates, and renewal requirements.
