Sweden's main residence-to-citizenship route is an application for Swedish citizenship. The general habitual-residence period is eight years, with defined shorter periods for Nordic citizens, former citizens, some partners of Swedish citizens, stateless people, refugees and applicants under 21.

Time since arrival alone does not show that Sweden was your usual home. All applicable requirements must be met when the case is decided.

EEA means the EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway.

An adult applicant generally must:

The main usual-residence period is eight years. Nordic citizens and former Swedish citizens can use a two-year period. A person living with a Swedish citizen generally needs seven years in Sweden plus five years living together and, in some cases, five years of the partner's Swedish citizenship. Applicants under 21 and recognized refugees generally use seven years; stateless applicants generally use five.

Some time does not count. Visitor, ordinary study and au pair permits are common examples, although some doctoral-study time can count when the record shows an intention to remain. Time abroad totaling more than six weeks in a year is deducted, and settling in another country ends the period of residence you can count. EU/EEA citizens and their family members must have met right-of-residence rules for the period relied on.

Applicants aged 16 to 66 generally need both Swedish-language and civic knowledge. Approved Swedish education can satisfy the requirement. The Swedish-society citizenship test continues, while accepted language qualifications and proficiency tests remain available. On September 30, 2026, the Migration Agency warned that the dedicated language test may be postponed; its timing awaits a government decision. The language requirement still applies.

Most applicants aged 18 to 67 must have stable personal employment or self-employment income of at least three income base amounts per year. A partner's income, capital income and several subsidized or unemployment-related payments do not count. Receiving social assistance for more than six months during the previous three years also prevents the ordinary requirement from being met. Listed pension, study, disability and similar exceptions can apply.

Sweden changed the adult citizenship rules on 6 June 2026. The current route also requires a qualifying residence status, reliable identity, knowledge of Swedish and Swedish society, sufficient personal income for most working-age applicants and conduct that satisfies the Migration Agency's assessment.

The government has not decided the language-test timetable following UHR’s postponement recommendation. Applicants must still satisfy the existing language requirement through accepted evidence unless exempt. The Swedish-society test continues.

Timing: The earlier timetable pointed to autumn 2027 at the earliest. The September 30 warning means applicants should not rely on that rollout date. The government will decide when the dedicated language test can be introduced.

What This Route Allows

After approval, the person becomes a Swedish citizen. Swedish citizenship allows the person to live and work in Sweden without immigration permission, vote in national elections when otherwise eligible and apply for a Swedish passport. It also carries EU citizenship rights.

Sweden allows dual and multiple citizenship under Swedish law, although another country may apply different rules.

What This Route Is Not

This is not automatic citizenship after eight calendar years. Habitual residence is a legal calculation, and the applicant must meet all other requirements when the case is decided.

It is separate from citizenship by descent, notification procedures and citizenship for a child. Nordic citizens should compare the application route with the separate notification procedure, which has different residence and filing rules.
