Slovakia Employee Residence
At a glance
If you have a job offer from a Slovak employer, you may apply for temporary residence to work there. Most new employees use a combined residence-and-work permit, but some need a separate work permit. Your employer must complete the vacancy and labor-office steps that apply to your job.
- Job offer required?
- Yes, with a contract matching the approved role
- Vacancy approval
- Required labor-office approval or a qualifying exemption
- Qualifications
- The training or professional license required for the job
Summary
Slovakia’s single permit normally lets an approved foreign employee live and work in the country through one application process. The employer must first complete the required vacancy and labor-office steps. Some cases instead need a separate work permit, so the application should follow the process for the actual job.

Eligibility
The Slovak employer must complete the required vacancy and labor-office steps for the job. Most new ordinary employees apply for temporary residence for employment under the single-permit process; some cases use a separate work permit.
The labor office must be able to approve the vacancy or the case must fit an exemption. The promised job, qualifications, and contract must match the application; a Blue Card has different conditions.
The employment contract must identify the real job and its pay and conditions. You also need the qualifications or professional license required for that role in Slovakia; experience alone does not replace a mandatory license.
More about this route
A job offer is most useful when the employer can explain how the vacancy will be approved or which exemption covers it. The contract and the applicant’s qualifications then need to match that position. Highly qualified applicants may have a different option through the EU Blue Card, which has its own conditions.
What This Route Allows
The permit allows you to live in Slovakia and do the work covered by the approval. Work is limited to the employment covered by the approval. If the employer or role changes, the applicable notification or approval procedure needs to be checked before relying on the existing permission for the new job.
What This Route Is Not
A job offer does not by itself authorize work. This route does not cover general freelancing or unrestricted work for other employers.
Next Steps
The Slovak employer can confirm the required vacancy reporting and labor-office procedure for the proposed hire. The worker then prepares the temporary-residence or separate work-permit documents that apply, using the promised role and contract rather than a general statement that employment will be available.
