Summary
Slovakia’s family residence lets an eligible adult spouse or minor child join a resident in the country. Dependent adult children and parents need to meet narrower rules. The sponsor must hold accepted Slovak temporary or permanent residence, and the family records must prove the relevant relationship.
Eligibility
Eligible relatives include a spouse aged at least 18, unmarried minor children, adult unmarried children unable to support themselves because of long-term ill health, and dependent parents lacking appropriate family support at home.
The sponsor must hold valid temporary or permanent residence in Slovakia and meet the requirements applicable to the relationship. A dependent-parent case needs actual dependence and the absence of suitable support in the home country.
The family must document the relationship and meet the applicable support, housing, and health-coverage requirements. Marriage and birth records from abroad may need authentication and translation before they can be accepted in Slovakia.
More about this route
For an older parent, being close to the family or receiving occasional help is not the whole test. The authority needs to assess actual dependence and the absence of appropriate support at home. The resulting residence permission also has its own work rules, which matter if another household income is part of the plan.
-
Qualifying resident sponsor Confirm valid temporary or permanent residence.
-
Exact family category Check spouse, minor child, or the narrower adult-child and parent rules.
-
Dependency and support records Document the conditions specific to the relationship.
A dependent parent needs actual dependence and a lack of suitable family support at home.
What This Route Allows
A family permit allows you to live with the sponsoring relative in Slovakia. Permission to work depends on the category and any additional employment requirements. The joining relative should have their own status documented; the sponsor’s residence card does not serve as the family member’s permission.
What This Route Is Not
The approved family category determines the rights granted. Living with a relative is not itself citizenship, and a later change in the relationship or the sponsor’s status can affect renewal.
Next Steps
The relationship determines the supporting documents. A spouse or child needs the relevant civil and custody records, while a dependent parent must establish actual dependence and the lack of suitable support at home. The family can then confirm the application procedure and whether the joining relative needs additional permission for planned employment.
