Summary

Suriname treats permission to live in the country and permission to employ a foreign worker as separate matters. The employer normally applies for the work permit, supported by the worker’s residence permission or residence-application record.

Arrange residence and work permission
  1. Confirm the job and any exemption Prepare job and qualification records and check whether a work permit is required.
  2. Prepare your residence records The work application needs a residence permit or proof that you have applied.
  3. Support your employer’s application Sign and provide the required documents; check all approvals before starting.

Ask whether you need advance MKV permission before traveling. Residence and work permissions are separate.

Could this pathway work for you?

Eligibility

Your employer must explain the job, working hours, business, and reason for hiring a foreign worker. You must support and sign the application. Some people, including qualifying returning people of Surinamese origin, may be exempt from the work-permit requirement.

The work-permit checklist includes a valid residence permit or proof of a residence application. Depending on your nationality and circumstances, you may also need advance permission to stay, called MKV, before traveling.

Prepare your passport and job documents, along with proof of how you will support yourself. The labor authority considers your qualifications and whether local workers are available.

What This Route Allows

Once the required permissions are issued, you can live and work in Suriname under their conditions. Check both approvals for how long they last and which job and employer they cover.

What This Route Is Not

Residence permission alone does not generally allow you to work. Entering as a tourist does not replace the required work approval.

Next Steps

  1. Ask a Surinamese consulate whether you need MKV permission before traveling.
  2. Coordinate the residence application with your employer so they have the records needed for the work permit.
  3. Prepare and sign the required job documents, or confirm whether an exemption applies.
  4. Check that all required permissions are in place before starting work.
