After three qualifying years of temporary residence in El Salvador immediately before applying, you can seek permanent residence, officially called definitive residence. You must document the residence history and how you support yourself. Tourist visits and a pending initial application do not count.

- Residents with three preceding years in a qualifying temporary category
- Evidence needed
- Residence or relationship records for the category
- Application
- Submit form F32 with residence history, police records, and a notarized financial-support statement
Summary
El Salvador offers definitive residence to qualifying temporary residents who have held their status for the three years immediately before applying. The applicant must document that history and continuing financial support. Definitive residence is not citizenship, and three years of physical presence alone is insufficient. People with qualifying Central American, Spanish, or Hispanic-American origin should compare the shorter rules.
Eligibility
Three qualifying years of temporary residence
The F32 procedure covers the ordinary three-year route. Student status has a separate restriction, so do not assume study time qualifies.
A confirmed immigration history
Ask DGME, El Salvador’s immigration authority, to confirm your residence category and renewals. Resolve gaps or expired documents before relying on the period. Diplomatic and other special categories need separate confirmation.
Personal and financial records
Prepare your valid passport, residence records, applicable police certificates, and a notarized statement explaining your home, financial support, and any work or income.
-
Assemble the full residence history Document the temporary category and renewals for the immediately preceding three years.
-
Have DGME confirm the history Resolve gaps and check any category restriction before relying on the period.
-
Prepare the F32 application Add continuing support and required personal records and maintain valid status during processing.
Time as a visitor or while awaiting approval does not count. The law also restricts how student status can be used.
What This Route Allows
Approval grants definitive residence. It requires a separate application and continuing compliance with the status and documentation requirements.
What This Route Is Not
Definitive residence is not citizenship, and three years of physical presence alone is insufficient. People with qualifying Central American, Spanish, or Hispanic-American origin should compare the shorter rules.
Next Steps
- Ask DGME to confirm that your category and residence history meet the three-year rule.
- Gather the residence records, passport, police certificates, and financial-support statement.
- Submit the F32 application and keep your existing status valid while it is processed.
