Summary
If an eligible university or other higher-education institution in Timor-Leste accepts you, you may apply for temporary permission to live there while you study.
The study visa comes under Article 39 of the Immigration and Asylum Law. Ask your institution and Immigration to confirm the current procedure and documents.
Eligibility
You need an eligible course and records proving your admission. Prepare the requested identity documents, course information, and evidence that you can support yourself during the stay.
Use the current Article 39 checklist. Older forms may refer to visa categories that have been replaced.
-
Confirm the course and process Ask the institution which current study-visa instructions apply.
-
Prepare admission and support records Use Immigration’s latest checklist rather than an outdated form.
-
Check your approved stay After approval, record the expiry date and ask about any needed extension.
Study permission and any part-time work authorization need separate checks.
What This Route Allows
The law provides temporary stay for the study period and a possible extension of up to six months. Immigration decides the actual period and whether to approve an extension.
What This Route Is Not
This does not give you unrestricted permission to work. The law makes possible part-time work subject to government rules, so confirm the authorization you need before accepting a job.
A possible six-month extension is not a guaranteed work permit after graduation.
Next Steps
- Ask your institution to confirm that the course qualifies and explain the current study-visa process.
- Obtain Immigration’s checklist and gather your admission, identity, and financial-support documents.
- Apply through the instructed channel. Check the approved study period and arrange any extension before the visa expires.
