Southeast Asia Residence Options Compared
A move to Southeast Asia often starts with a job, a university place, or a family relationship. For a North American or European household, the useful comparison is what each person can do after arrival and which approvals support that activity. A visa allowing entry is not always permission to work or remain for the length of a contract.
The regional guide brings together selected routes across eleven countries. The comparison below emphasizes ordinary employment, study, and family options alongside some more specialized choices.
Check what the employer can actually support
| Destination | Route | Main check |
|---|---|---|
| Brunei | Work Pass | Employer’s labor approval, medical and insurance requirements, and pass endorsement |
| Cambodia | Employer-supported work | Ordinary Type E entry, separate work documents, and an approved stay long enough for the job |
| Laos | Technical-worker residence | Employer’s foreign-labor quota and approval, followed by separate work and stay documents |
| Myanmar | Approved-investment employer route | MIC or SEZ employer support and a currently available registration and immigration process |
| Timor-Leste | Employment Visa | A qualifying contract under the current work-visa framework |
| Indonesia | Employer-sponsored residence | Labor approval for the particular position and matching immigration permission |
| Malaysia | Employment Pass | Revised basic-salary thresholds, sector rules, employer approval, and the actual grant |
Cambodia’s embassy currently describes a 30-day initial Type E stay and a further 30-day extension. That is not evidence of a universal year-long work stay. The employer must confirm the longer-stay process before the employee relies on it. Myanmar’s investment-employer route requires the relevant investment and employment approvals; an ordinary business visa is not proof of permission for any job.
For Malaysia, applications from June 1, 2026 use the revised categories. Ask the employer to check basic salary rather than total compensation, the applicable sector floor, and any required plan for developing a local successor. The policy’s five- or ten-year employment-duration limits should not be read as guaranteed single-pass validity.
Work out the family’s permission separately
| Situation | Route | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Joining a Malaysia Employment Pass holder | Worker-family residence | Older Category III passes and revised-framework passes have different dependent rules |
| Married to a Malaysian citizen | Citizen-spouse residence | Work or business needs the prescribed endorsement |
| Joining a commercial 9(g) worker in the Philippines | Worker-family visa | Spouse or unmarried child under 21; separate inclusion application |
| Joining a qualifying Singapore EP or S Pass worker | Dependant’s Pass | Sponsor’s own fixed monthly salary must reach SGD 6,000, with other sponsor tests |
| Joining a foreign worker in Thailand | Worker-family visa | Sponsor status, family evidence, and extension rules must fit |
| Joining family in Vietnam | TT family route | A qualifying foreign-worker sponsor can support an eligible spouse or child without Vietnamese ancestry |
Family residence does not always give the second adult permission to work. Malaysia distinguishes a worker’s dependent from a citizen’s spouse. Singapore has separate employment or qualifying business-activity requirements. Check each child’s age and each adult’s plans against the actual category before assuming the principal worker’s approval covers the household.
Choose a course with its immigration limits in view
Higher-education study options include Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam.
Confirm the exact institution and course before paying a deposit. The Philippines’ 9(f) route is for students aged 18 or older taking education above high-school level. Indonesia separates higher education from nonformal courses. Malaysia’s student work permission is limited by the school-break, sector, and prior-approval rules. Singapore’s work exemption depends on the institution and the student’s circumstances. Unconfirmed earnings should not be the foundation of the study budget.
Thailand’s ED Plus applies to a bachelor’s degree or higher and provides an application for a one-year stay after graduation. It does not itself authorize any job. Malaysia’s Graduate Pass is limited to listed nationalities and completed Malaysian degrees, with a valid Student Pass during processing. It allows limited part-time work in permitted sectors. China and India have a time-limited extension through December 31, 2026 under the policy reviewed here.
Separate business investment from permanent residence
Laos’s investor route requires an approved business and evidence of the applicant’s qualifying investment role. It is not a residence program established by purchasing a personal home. Entry, the stay-permit card, and multiple-entry permission have distinct steps.
Singapore’s professional-worker permanent-residence application starts with a current qualifying Employment Pass or S Pass. ICA considers the whole case. There is no automatic approval after a fixed number of years, and National Service obligations need a separate check for relevant male family members.
