Summary
Taiwan’s Digital Nomad Visitor Visa lets eligible remote workers spend six months in Taiwan while working for clients or employers outside Taiwan.
Under the rules effective in 2026, you can apply for extensions of up to six months at a time, to a maximum of two years for each stay. Each extension needs approval. This remains a visitor visa, even if you stay longer.
-
Check your passport and work Confirm eligibility and that you will not serve Taiwanese employers or businesses.
-
Prove the required finances Use a prior nomad visa or the salary option, plus the required savings and insurance.
-
Apply for the visa and any extensions Complete the reviews and apply again before expiry if you want to stay longer.
This is a visitor visa. A possible two-year total stay does not mean two years are granted at the start.
Eligibility
Passport and remote work
You need a passport from a country on Taiwan’s visa-exempt entry list, subject to its passport-specific restrictions. It must have at least six months of validity and blank pages. Temporary and emergency passports do not qualify.
The Bureau of Consular Affairs application checklist asks for a résumé or portfolio, a current employment or freelance contract, and a form describing your planned activities. Your work cannot provide services to employers or businesses in Taiwan.
One of three ways to qualify
You must show one of the following:
- A digital nomad visa previously issued by another country.
- If you are 20–29: annual salary of at least USD $20,000 in either of the last two years.
- If you are 30 or older: annual salary of at least USD $40,000 in either of the last two years.
Savings and insurance apply to everyone
Separately, your bank records must show an average balance of at least USD $10,000 in each month of the last six months.
You also need international health insurance with full hospitalization coverage for the entire planned stay. Having another country’s digital nomad visa does not remove the savings or insurance requirements.
What This Route Allows
The visa allows a six-month stay, multiple entries, and the approved remote work. You can apply for extensions inside Taiwan, subject to the two-year total limit for each stay.
Your spouse, minor child, or adult child unable to care for themselves because of a physical or mental disability may apply alongside you. Each family member needs their own application and approval.
What This Route Is Not
It does not allow a Taiwanese job or services for a Taiwanese business. It also does not automatically lead to a residence permit or permanent residence; those require a different route for which you qualify.
An initial approval does not guarantee an extension or the full two-year stay.
Next Steps
- Check your passport and choose the prior-visa or salary option that you can document.
- Prepare your work contract, activity form, six months of bank records, and insurance.
- Apply through the responsible Taiwan overseas mission. If you are already in Taiwan visa-free or on an eligible non-extendable visitor visa, apply to the Bureau of Consular Affairs or a designated Ministry of Foreign Affairs office at least 10 working days before your legal stay expires.
- Complete the National Development Council’s eligibility review and the consular visa process. For an extension, apply to the National Immigration Agency before your stay ends.
