Summary
The UK International Sportsperson visa is a sponsored work route for elite sportspeople and qualified coaches whose UK employment will develop their sport at the highest level. It requires endorsement from the sport's governing body and sponsorship from a UK employer.
The visa can last up to 3 years and can be extended. GOV.UK says settlement may be possible after 5 years if at least one of your visas lasted longer than 12 months and you continue to meet the requirements.
Eligibility
You may be a fit if:
- You are an elite sportsperson or a qualified coach.
- You have a UK role that will develop your sport at the highest level.
- You can obtain endorsement from your sport's UK governing body.
- You have a UK employer willing to issue a certificate of sponsorship.
- You can meet the route's English-language and savings requirements.
What This Route Allows
The visa lets you come to the UK to work for your sponsoring employer in elite sport or high-level coaching. It is initially granted for up to 3 years and can be extended. After 5 years on the route you may be able to apply for settlement, provided at least one visa lasted longer than 12 months and you continue to qualify.
What This Route Is Not
- A route you can use without a UK employer sponsor and a certificate of sponsorship.
- Available without endorsement from your sport's governing body.
- For amateur or recreational sport — it is for elite-level work.
- A guaranteed path to settlement; settlement depends on meeting the residence and route requirements.
Next Steps
- Confirm you qualify as an elite sportsperson or qualified coach for your sport.
- Line up a UK employer prepared to sponsor you and issue a certificate of sponsorship.
- Obtain the required endorsement from your sport's UK governing body.
- Check the current English-language and savings (maintenance) requirements on GOV.UK.
- Prepare your supporting documents and apply through the official GOV.UK route.
