Summary

International Sportsperson is a sponsored route for an elite athlete or qualified coach who is internationally established and whose UK work will develop the sport at its highest level. The relevant Home Office-approved governing body must endorse the person, and an employer must issue a certificate of sponsorship.

Eligibility

The governing-body endorsement and sponsor certificate must cover the same role and period. The applicant normally needs £1,270 maintenance unless exempt after 12 months in the UK or the sponsor certifies it. A person applying for more than 12 months must meet A1 English in speaking and listening; a grant of 12 months or less has no English requirement.

The route is for genuine elite playing or coaching, not ordinary sports employment, fitness instruction or a general talent claim. The particular sport's endorsement criteria control the competitive level and evidence.

Current official stage: Immigration Rules laid with a deferred commencement date

The settlement-stage language requirement rises from B1 to B2 on 26 March 2027 unless an exemption applies. The sponsorship, qualifying-period and continuous-residence rules do not disappear.

Timing: The B2 settlement requirement takes effect on 26 March 2027. Applications made before that date remain subject to the rules then in force; applicants planning to file on or after it should prepare for B2 unless an exemption applies.

The current five-year route to settlement may change

Current official stage: Consultation closed; government analyzing feedback

The International Sportsperson route currently leads to settlement after five qualifying years. The proposal would generally replace five-year work-route settlement with a 10-year baseline that can be adjusted, but final and transitional rules are pending.

Timing: The consultation ran from 20 November 2025 to 12 February 2026. GOV.UK currently says the government is analyzing feedback. No general implementation date has been announced, and current settlement rules remain in force unless and until Immigration Rules changes take effect.

What This Route Allows

Permission can last up to three years and can be extended while sponsorship and endorsement continue. The holder may work for the sponsor, take a qualifying second job in limited circumstances, play for a national team, work as a sports broadcaster, volunteer and study. Eligible partners and children can join and generally work, except as professional sportspeople or coaches. Public funds are barred and IHS applies. A grant of 12 months or less costs £340; a longer application costs £819 outside or £943 inside the UK from 8 April 2026.

Settlement remains available after five qualifying years if at least one International Sportsperson grant lasted more than 12 months, the sponsor still needs the worker, continuous residence is met and language/Life in the UK requirements are satisfied. B1 is current for settlement; the enacted B2 rule begins 26 March 2027. A dependent partner normally needs five years.

What This Route Is Not

It does not allow the main applicant to start or run a business and does not create open employment. The government's earned-settlement proposal had not removed the current five-year route by 15 August 2026.
