South Africa Study Visa
At a glance
If a qualifying South African institution accepts you for higher education, you can apply for a Study Visa. You need financial support, medical cover from a South African registered scheme, and the institution's written commitments for your enrollment and reporting.
- Admission
- Official acceptance identifying the course and its length
- Funds
- Evidence of support for the studies and stay
- Medical coverage
- A registered medical scheme and the required institution undertakings
Summary
South Africa’s study visa lets a foreign student stay for an accepted course. The institution must confirm its duration and provide the required undertakings. Financial support and membership in a registered medical scheme are also part of the file. These immigration requirements remain separate from simply securing an academic place.
Eligibility
Provide official acceptance showing your course and its length, along with enough financial support. You need medical cover with a South African registered medical scheme and must renew that cover annually.
The institution must provide the required written commitments about registration and reporting. Prepare the current passport, medical, police, and support documents. Minors also need the required consent and guardian arrangements.
Apply through the mission or authorized channel responsible for where you live, using its current personal-document checklist.
-
Confirm your study place Get acceptance and the institution’s required commitments.
-
Prepare support and medical cover Gather financial evidence and registered medical-scheme coverage.
-
Apply and keep conditions met Track enrollment, annual medical cover, and the visa term.
The limited part-time work allowance does not remove the study-visa conditions.
What This Route Allows
You can study at the approved institution for the period granted. Higher-education students may work part time for up to 20 hours a week under the study-visa rules, while meeting the visa conditions.
What This Route Is Not
A study place does not automatically give you a visa. The part-time work allowance is limited, and the visa does not guarantee a graduate work visa, permanent residence, or citizenship.
Next Steps
- Confirm your place and obtain the institution's acceptance and required written commitments.
- Gather funding, medical-scheme, personal, and any minor-consent or guardian records.
- Apply through the responsible channel, keep your medical cover renewed annually, and track the visa expiry date.
