Southern Africa Residence Options Compared
A move to Southern Africa can be based on a local job, a business you operate, a course, or a qualifying family relationship. South Africa and Namibia also have options for some people working remotely. South Africa has separate retirement and financial-independence routes.
This comparison covers Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Namibia, and South Africa. It is intended to help readers, including those from North America and Europe, identify an option worth investigating. It does not assume that someone wants to move, has a sponsor, or already meets the requirements. Neighboring Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and Malawi appear in the East Africa guide.
Compare the routes: the Southern Africa residence guide brings the requirements and outcomes together.
Start with the reason for the move
| Country | Local work | Business | Higher education | Joining a spouse or family |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Botswana | Employer-supported permission | Operating-business permission | Student residence | Spouse of a citizen |
| Eswatini | Employment permit | Business-person permit | Student pass | Dependent spouse |
| Lesotho | Work and residence | Business residence | Student residence | Joining a spouse |
| Namibia | Employment residence | Investor permit | Student permit | Accompanying a permit holder |
| South Africa | Critical skills, general work, or company transfer | Business visa | Study visa | Citizen or permanent-resident family |
A work offer needs an employer willing to supply the required evidence. A business application needs a real activity, suitable registrations, and permission for the applicant’s own role. A study application needs a qualifying institution and financial support. Marriage must be documented, and the sponsor’s particular status must support the family category. Children and other relatives may have different rules from a spouse.
Entry permission and permission to live, work, or study can be different documents. In Botswana, for example, a work permit does not replace the residence application. University of Botswana guidance describes student residence arrangements and a BWP 1,500 immigration-service fee; confirm the current amount and sequence with the institution. Lesotho’s development agency lists LSL 3,000 for two-year residence, with application and center service charges separate. These are application-related costs, not the full cost of a move. Investment and financial independence solve different needs
Namibia’s investor permit supports an active business. Introduced on September 1, 2026, it can grant up to five years of residence and work for approved investment activity. Applicants submit through the Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board, followed by an immigration decision. The board says the detailed capital and investment criteria are not yet approved for public release. Its published NAD 2,600 fee per year after approval is a permit fee, not the qualifying investment or total business budget. Buying a marketed property package does not establish that someone meets this route. NIPDB’s investor-permit guidance and FAQ.
Botswana, Eswatini, and Lesotho have operating-business procedures. These require the relevant business and personal approvals. The sources reviewed do not establish one universal investment price that could fairly be ranked against a fixed-price residence program. The linked pathway documents identify the business evidence to confirm before committing money.
South Africa’s financial-independence category is based on wealth. A person who can document at least ZAR 12,000,000 in net assets can apply for permanent residence, with a separate ZAR 120,000 government payment after approval and other applicable charges. Net assets means assets minus debts. This is different from buying an approved asset or operating a business. It is also different from the retired-person visa, which tests qualifying recurring payments. See the financial-independence pathway and the South African Embassy’s permanent-residence requirements.
Remote work has its own conditions
Namibia’s Digital Nomad Visa allows six months and is not renewable. Published monthly income starts at USD 2,000 for the principal applicant, with additions for family members. The current fee is NAD 3,300. NIPDB says a new application can be made 12 months after the previous visa expires. Insurance, financial statements, police, and health records are part of the application. NIPDB digital-nomad guidance.
South Africa’s remote-work visa covers employees of foreign employers who meet its income and other requirements. It should not be treated as a general local-work permission. Compare the eligible work arrangement, term, tax obligations, and accompanying-family arrangements before choosing between the two countries.
Announcements that should not be treated as open applications
Botswana has announced an investment-citizenship initiative. The program website describes an expected 2026 opening and invites registration of interest. An operative law, final requirements, and an open application process were not verified. Published promotional contribution figures are not a confirmed application price. South Africa’s Cabinet-approved 2026 White Paper proposes changes including to investment, work, and retirement categories. Cabinet approval of a policy does not itself replace the current visa rules. This comparison uses the published existing categories rather than presenting the proposed replacements as available. What still needs individual confirmation
For each move, confirm the correct filing channel, accepted documents, fees, work rights, and renewal conditions. A longer stay is not automatically permanent residence or citizenship. If traveling to Lesotho or Eswatini through South Africa, check the South African entry or transit requirements separately.
The individual pathway resources link to the country-specific official checklists and explain the limits of each option.
