Azerbaijan Citizen-Family Residence
At a glance
If a relative is an Azerbaijani citizen, you may qualify for temporary residence through that connection. Eligible relationships include spouses, parents, children, and certain siblings, grandparents, grandchildren, and other listed relatives. Check the exact category and the records needed to prove it.

Summary
Azerbaijan recognizes a wider set of citizen-family connections for temporary residence than many countries do. Alongside spouses, parents and children, its published document list covers certain siblings, grandparents, grandchildren and other specified relatives. The useful starting point is the exact relationship and the records that prove it.
This is a residence application supported by an Azerbaijani citizen, not a claim to citizenship through that person. The relative’s consent forms part of the process, and the applicant still has to satisfy the ordinary residence-document requirements.
-
Identify the listed relationship Use the authority’s close-family table for an Azerbaijani-citizen relative.
-
Connect the birth, marriage, and other family records Document the full relationship chain and obtain the relative’s consent.
-
Submit the temporary-residence application Include the required address, identity, and other personal documents.
This is residence through a citizen relative. Citizenship and employment need their own legal basis.
Eligibility
The sponsor must hold Azerbaijani citizenship and the relationship must fall within the close-relative category. Where surnames have changed or the link passes through another generation, the documentation must connect each person without a gap.
Foreign records may need translation and notarization, subject to applicable treaty arrangements. Consent can be provided in the manner specified by the authority; the official guidance distinguishes a relative attending in person from one signing elsewhere.
What This Route Allows
The successful applicant receives temporary residence based on the family relationship. The permission can be extended while the relevant conditions remain satisfied. A residence card documents the approved stay and return arrangements during its validity.
What This Route Is Not
This is separate from reunification with a foreign resident of Azerbaijan. It does not make every cousin or distant relative eligible, and it does not give nationality or unrestricted employment by itself. Those questions need their own legal basis.
Next Steps
- Match the relationship to the authority’s close-family document table.
- Gather the complete chain of birth, marriage, and other family records and the relative’s consent.
- Submit the temporary-residence file with the required address and personal documentation.
