At a glance

If you are a citizen of a participating Caribbean Single Market and Economy (CSME) country and work in an approved field, you may be able to live and work in Barbados without an ordinary work permit. You need a CARICOM Skills Certificate and must complete any Barbados verification or registration requirements.

Summary

Citizens of participating CSME states in approved occupational categories may live and work in Barbados without an ordinary work permit after obtaining and, where required, verifying a CARICOM Skills Certificate.

Citizens of Belize, Dominica, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines should first review the separate full-free-movement route, which began on October 1, 2025. That arrangement does not require a Skills Certificate or work permit.

From a covered skilled category to documented status in Barbados
  1. Check citizenship and occupation Confirm that your citizenship and occupational or qualification category are covered by the CSME skilled-national framework.
  2. Obtain the Skills Certificate Apply through the competent national authority with the required citizenship and qualification evidence.
  3. Complete Barbados verification Follow any required local registration or verification before relying on the skilled-national work rights.

Citizens of Belize, Dominica, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines should also check the separate full-free-movement route, which does not require a Skills Certificate.

What This Route Allows

A properly documented skilled national can seek and take qualifying employment in Barbados without the ordinary work-permit process. Applicable contingent rights may extend to qualifying dependents.

What This Route Is Not

CARICOM membership alone does not create the skilled-worker right. This status is not citizenship, permanent residence, or permission to work outside the recognized CSME framework.
