Summary

The Barbados Immigration Act defines two family bases for immigrant status: a child under 18 with a citizen or permanent-resident parent living in Barbados, and a parent or grandparent of a Barbados citizen living in Barbados. Both require a family member who is willing and able to provide care and maintenance.

Eligibility

For the child route, the applicant must be under 18, parenthood must be established to the Minister's satisfaction, and the parent must be a citizen or permanent resident residing in Barbados. For the parent or grandparent route, the sponsoring child or grandchild must be a Barbados citizen residing there. The applicant must also satisfy the other immigration, identity, health, and character requirements.

The Immigration Bill would remove immigrant status as a future application category and create different permanent-resident bases for specified relatives, including a citizen's spouse, direct descendants, and certain dependents of permanent residents. These proposed categories are not a one-for-one continuation of the current family route.

Timing: Both bills were introduced on 21 April 2026 and referred to a joint select committee on 29 April 2026. Parliament still lists them at the House stage. If passed, each bill says it would commence on a date set by proclamation; no commencement date has been announced.

What This Route Allows

If approved, the applicant receives immigrant status. A later permanent-resident route has its own separate requirements.

What This Route Is Not

This is not a general route for siblings, adult children joining a parent, cousins, or any person with a Barbadian relative. The exact applicant-sponsor relationship and support requirements matter.
