Summary

If your spouse or parent works in Bahrain, you may be able to join them through family residence. The worker must meet the sponsorship requirements, and their employer normally submits the application. A separate approval is needed if you want to work.

For the ordinary foreign-worker route, the employer normally submits the family request through Bahrain’s employment-permit system. This differs from the family options attached to Golden Residency. A dependent who wants employment must obtain the separate work approval.

Eligibility

The Labor Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) lists family residence for a spouse and eligible dependents up to age 24 where the foreign worker earns at least BHD 400 a month. Confirm the recorded salary, age requirements, and family documents against LMRA's checklist.

For this employee-family route, the employer applies through LMRA's online Expat Management System. Family rules for Golden Residency holders are separate.

Marriage and birth certificates may need official authentication and translation. Ask whether each family member needs a separate application and check any housing requirements. Older children should confirm that they still meet the age rules.

Joining a family member who works in Bahrain
  1. Check who qualifies Confirm the relationship, age limit, and worker's eligibility to sponsor you.
  2. Check the requirements Confirm the salary, employment, housing, and document rules.
  3. Prepare the employer's application Gather the family records and have the employer use the correct LMRA service.
  4. Complete the residence steps Follow entry instructions, track renewal dates, and arrange separate approval if you want to work.

Family residence depends on approval and does not automatically allow employment.

What This Route Allows

If approved, you can live in Bahrain for the period shown on your family residence permit. Renewal normally depends on the family relationship and the worker keeping their qualifying status. Check each family member's expiry date.

What This Route Is Not

Family residence is different from a family visit visa. It does not give you citizenship, independent permanent residence, or automatic permission to work. LMRA has a separate work-approval process for family members. If the worker's job or status changes, ask how this affects your residence.

Next Steps

  1. Confirm that your relationship, age, and the worker's salary and residence status meet the rules.
  2. Check the document and housing requirements with the employer.
  3. Prepare the family records and have the employer submit through the correct LMRA service.
  4. Complete the entry and residence steps. Track each permit's renewal date and get separate work approval before taking a job.
