Summary
Curaçao has a residence-permit category for foreign nationals supported by retirement income or assets. A rentier is someone living from assets or investment income. Dutch and U.S. citizens generally use the separate admission-by-law declaration.
Eligibility
You need evidence supporting retirement or independent means and a bank declaration showing sufficient financial resources for yourself and any accompanying family. The category checklist does not state one universal income amount for all households.
The application also requires identity, birth, good-conduct, and other applicable records. Confirm legalization, translation, and document-age requirements before ordering them.
For a first application, the official instructions require awaiting the decision abroad. Someone already holding residence permission may use the appropriate change-of-purpose process. Remaining as a visitor during an initial application is not the procedure described for this category.
What This Route Allows
An approved permit authorizes residence for its stated purpose and conditions. Under the policy effective April 1, 2026, eligible temporary applicants can request up to three years, with fees payable for each requested year. Approval for the maximum period is not automatic.
Dependent relatives require the appropriate family applications; their permit duration cannot exceed the principal applicant's. Confirm renewal timing before expiry.
What This Route Is Not
This is not work authorization. Employment, remote work, and actively operating a business should be assessed under the appropriate category.
The immigration category and the penshonado tax regime are separate. The 2026 policy includes an indefinite-residence ground for people who meet the relevant penshonado tax-law provisions, but being retired alone does not establish that eligibility. This guide does not assess tax concessions or promise indefinite residence.
Next Steps
- Confirm the correct category based on nationality, income, and current immigration status.
- Obtain the official retirement or rentier checklist and document support for the household.
- Confirm the requested permit duration and current total fee before applying.
- Follow the applicable procedure for waiting abroad or changing an existing residence purpose, and review the conditions after approval.
