Summary

The Republic of Cyprus has a family-reunification route for qualifying relatives of a foreign resident. It can support a spouse and dependent children joining an established household, but the sponsor’s residence history and the nature of their permit affect whether the application can proceed.

That timing can matter as much as the relationship itself. A person taking a temporary job or beginning studies should not assume that their family can move at the same time. The ordinary route described here has waiting and eligibility conditions, while some specialized sponsor categories use different arrangements.

Could this pathway work for you?

Eligibility

The ordinary resident-family route covers a spouse aged over 21 where the marriage has lasted at least one year, and unmarried dependent children under 18, subject to custody requirements.

The sponsor normally needs two years of legal residence in Cyprus and a qualifying permit with a reasonable prospect of permanent residence. Special categories can have different conditions.

The family must document the relationship and meet the applicable support, housing, and health-coverage requirements. Marriage and birth records from abroad may need authentication and translation before they can be accepted in Cyprus.

Resolve the waiting conditions first
  1. Sponsor's residence Check permit type and residence history, including any special category.
  2. Family category Confirm marriage duration, ages, dependency, and custody where relevant.
  3. Proof of support and housing Document support, housing, and health coverage.

Ordinary rules and special categories can have different conditions and timing.

What This Route Allows

A family permit allows you to live with the sponsoring relative in Cyprus. Permission to work depends on the category and any additional employment requirements. The joining relative should have their own status documented; the sponsor’s residence card does not serve as the family member’s permission.

What This Route Is Not

The approved family category determines the rights granted. Living with a relative is not itself citizenship, and a later change in the relationship or the sponsor’s status can affect renewal.

Next Steps

The sponsor’s permit and residence history establish whether the ordinary waiting conditions apply or a special category is available. Marriage duration, ages, and custody records then need to fit that category. Resolving those points before setting a shared moving date helps the household understand whether it can apply together or must plan for a later reunification.
