Summary
If your spouse, recognized partner, or parent holds qualifying temporary residence in Ecuador, you may be able to join them through family residence, known as amparo. You need official records proving the relationship.
Your permission follows your relative’s visa. You do not need to qualify independently through work or investment, but changes to their visa or your relationship can affect your stay.
Eligibility
The sponsor must hold a qualifying temporary-residence visa. Civil records must prove the marriage, recognized union, or parent-child relationship. This is separate from permanent residence through an Ecuadorian citizen.
The application requires the sponsor’s valid visa and the family’s civil records. The published checklist requires an additional USD $250 in monthly income for each adult child being sponsored. The sponsor must also satisfy the applicable means-of-support requirements.
The application needs a valid passport, applicable background records, and evidence of lawful status if applying in Ecuador. Foreign records must meet the authentication and translation rules. The electronic application and payment must be completed as instructed by the Foreign Ministry.

What This Route Allows
If approved, you can live in Ecuador for the period linked to your relative’s temporary visa. Keep track of both their visa and your own permission when planning renewal.
What This Route Is Not
This is not independent permanent residence or citizenship. Changes to the sponsor’s visa or the family relationship can affect the dependent permission.
Next Steps

- Gather the valid visa, family records, and required financial-support evidence. The checklist requires another USD $250 a month for each adult child being sponsored.
- Arrange any parental authorization needed when a child’s parent is absent.
- Prepare your personal documents and authenticate or translate foreign records as required.
- Complete the Foreign Ministry’s electronic application and payment, checking lawful status if applying inside Ecuador.
