Ethiopia Spouse Residence
At a glance
If you are married to an Ethiopian citizen, you can apply for temporary residence through marriage. You need proof of your marriage, your spouse's Ethiopian citizenship, and enough financial support for your stay.
- Who may qualify
- The spouse of an Ethiopian citizen
- Marriage evidence
- A marriage certificate, with authentication and translation where required
- Money to show
- ETB 500,000 plus a bank letter, or a house title, or a vehicle ownership certificate
Summary
A foreign spouse can apply to live with an Ethiopian citizen through spouse residence, supported by marriage records, the citizen's identity and means of support, and evidence of lawful entry. A marriage performed abroad needs the required authentication and translation, and the applicant's passport must have sufficient remaining validity.
The financial checklist offers alternatives: an ETB 500,000 balance with a bank letter, a house title or a vehicle ownership certificate. This is evidence, not a mandatory cash payment by every applicant, and adequate support must still be shown. Marriage does not automatically issue residence or work permission.
Eligibility
Provide your spouse's Ethiopian passport or local ID, their supporting letter, and your marriage certificate. If you married abroad, the certificate needs Foreign Ministry authentication—official confirmation that the document is accepted—and an English or Amharic translation where required.
Your own passport must have at least six months left before it expires. You also need records showing that you entered Ethiopia lawfully.
Immigration and Citizenship Service (ICS) lists three alternatives for financial evidence: a bank balance of at least ETB 500,000 with a bank letter, a house title, or a vehicle ownership certificate. The cash amount is not a payment that every applicant must make. You must still show adequate means of support.
-
Document your marriage Prepare accepted marriage and citizenship records.
-
Show financial support Use the evidence ICS accepts for your circumstances.
-
Apply and check the dates Follow the temporary residence and renewal conditions.
Financial evidence has alternatives; the listed bank balance is not a mandatory payment for everyone.
What This Route Allows
You can live in Ethiopia as the spouse of a citizen for the approved period. The temporary permission can be renewed, subject to its conditions.
What This Route Is Not
Marriage does not automatically grant residence or citizenship. This is not an Ethiopian Origin ID, and you should not assume that the residence permission also lets you work.
Next Steps
- Check which marriage, translation, and authentication documents ICS requires for your case.
- Gather identity, lawful-entry, spouse-support, and accepted financial records.
- Apply for temporary residence and check the conditions and renewal dates.
