Summary
Finland’s post-study and research permit gives eligible graduates and researchers time to find employment or establish a business after completing their Finnish studies or research. An application can be made within five years after the earlier study or research permit expired.
The granted permit provides unrestricted work rights during its validity. Finding a job does not itself force an immediate change to a new permit category.

Eligibility
- Complete an eligible Finnish degree or qualifying research with the required permit history.
- Meet the application deadline and the remaining time allowance.
- Document sufficient funds for the requested period.
What This Route Allows
Stay to find work or start a business, with unrestricted work rights during the permit. Finding a job does not by itself require an immediate permit change.
What This Route Is Not
A foreign degree alone does not qualify. This temporary permission is not permanent residence.
Next Steps
Collect completion and permit records, calculate the available period, and file before expiry if extending from within Finland.
Before using the full job-search period, check whether you qualify for the separate permanent-residence route for certain Finnish higher-education graduates. That route has language and continuing-residence conditions. Migri states that a person already granted the full two-year continuous job-search permit cannot obtain permanent residence on that same job-search basis; a different qualifying basis may be needed.
