Faroe Islands EU-Citizen Work Permit

Faroe Islands Residency
Pathway overview

At a glance

EU citizens can use a special Faroese scheme to apply for residence and work permission while unemployment remains below the scheme's limits. An EU passport does not give EU free-movement rights in the Faroe Islands. Nordic citizens have separate rights and do not need this route.

Summary

An EU passport does not provide EU free-movement rights in the Faroe Islands. Instead, a special local scheme gives EU citizens a way to obtain residence and work permission when unemployment remains below the scheme’s limits. Nordic citizens already have separate rights and do not need this route.

The employer’s approval status changes the procedure. Pre-approved employers use one process; other employers can still support an application, but the worker must wait for the permit before starting. That distinction is worth resolving before an employer sets a start date.

Could this pathway work for you?

Eligibility

The applicant needs an eligible EU citizenship and a job of at least thirty hours per week on acceptable local terms. The scheme’s availability depends on the published labor-market conditions, rather than being a permanent exemption from immigration control.

The employer’s pre-approval must be checked against the correct scheme. Approval for one recruitment process does not automatically establish approval for another. The worker must also hold any professional authorization required for the role.

Employer approval determines the applicable work-start procedure
  1. Check citizenship and scheme availability Confirm the eligible EU nationality and current labor-market announcement.
  2. Verify the employer's approval Check approval under this specific scheme and the job's hours and local terms.
  3. Use the correct application procedure Follow the work-start rules that apply to the employer's approval status.

EU free movement does not apply in the Faroe Islands. Approval under a different recruitment scheme is not interchangeable.

What This Route Allows

Approval allows residence and work for the named Faroese job. Changing employer or position generally needs a new permission, and any sideline job has separate rules. Eligible family members can consider accompanying-family residence.

What This Route Is Not

This is not EU free movement or a residence right for everyone holding a European passport. A permit does not authorize settlement in Denmark. An announced suspension would change availability for new applications, so a past approval does not establish that the scheme remains open.

Next Steps

  1. Check citizenship and the current scheme announcement.
  2. Verify the employer’s pre-approval status and the job’s hours and pay.
  3. Use the correct application and work-start rules for that employer.
