France's recherche d'emploi ou création d'entreprise status gives certain graduates of French institutions and former Talent researchers one year to look for qualified work or create a business connected to their studies or research.

A recent graduate applying from France normally needs a current student or student-mobility permit and must have obtained a qualifying French diploma within the previous 12 months. Someone who left France after graduating can apply from abroad within four years of obtaining the diploma. A former Talent researcher can apply after completing the research work.

The status lasts one year and is not renewable. Its purpose is to bridge to an appropriate employee, Talent, or self-employment permit once the person has a qualifying job or business.

For the graduate route, the French qualification must generally be one of the following:

An applicant still in France must normally hold a student or student-mobility residence card and apply during the final two months before it expires. The diploma must have been obtained within the last 12 months.

An applicant who returned abroad after study must have obtained the qualifying diploma in France and apply within four years of graduation for the corresponding VLS-TS.

A Talent researcher must hold the relevant card and have completed the research. The route does not apply to Algerian students under the general rules; bilateral migration agreements can instead provide an APS or different conditions for some nationalities.

What This Route Allows

The permit or VLS-TS allows a one-year stay to seek work or create a business related to the person's French studies or research. During that year, the holder may work as an employee without the ordinary 964-hour student cap and the employer does not need a separate work authorization, but the job must:

At the end of the year, a qualifying job can support an employee or Talent card, and a credible business can support entrepreneur/profession libérale or Talent project-leader residence. The final category depends on the contract, salary, qualifications, and business facts.

What This Route Is Not

This is not a general post-study open work permit, a year for unrelated casual work, or a renewable holding status. A job unrelated to the qualification or below the official salary floor does not receive the route's special work treatment.

It does not apply after any French course or language program. The exact diploma list matters. It also does not guarantee the next residence card; the person must qualify for that card before the one-year bridge expires.
