Ghana Business Residence

Ghana Residency
Pathway overview

At a glance

If you will run an approved business in Ghana, you may be able to apply to live there through that business. Both the company and your own role must meet the rules. Registering a company alone does not give you residence or permission to work.

Your role
A qualifying shareholder role or approved foreign-staff position
Current rules
Confirm registration, investment, and sector requirements following the July 2026 law change
Documents
Company, tax, financial, appointment, identity, police, and medical records

Summary

A qualifying business role can support a foreign shareholder or employee's application to live in Ghana, based on an approved company and the work they will carry out. Company, tax, financial and appointment records must support the activity, and any separate work or professional approval still needs to be arranged.

The investment law changed in July 2026, while some older official pages retain figures from the repealed law. Confirm current registration, sector and funding rules with the authorities before committing money. Company registration, passive shares or property ownership alone do not provide residence.

Eligibility

Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has a permit process for shareholders and approved foreign staff. Ask GIS and the investment authority whether your ownership role or job qualifies, which business sectors are open to you, and what registration and investment requirements apply.

Ghana changed its investment law in July 2026. Some older investment-agency pages still list minimum amounts under the repealed law. Confirm the current rules before committing money; those old figures should not be treated as the price of residence.

GIS asks for company registration, tax and account records, and the relevant investment or Interior Ministry approval. Your own documents include evidence of your appointment and qualifications, police and medical reports, your passport, and non-citizen identification.

  2. Obtain the business and personal approvals Prepare company records and the documents needed for your role.
  3. Apply to live in Ghana through the business Follow the residence conditions and keep the supporting records current.

Registering a company does not by itself grant residence or permission to work.

What This Route Allows

If approved, you can live in Ghana for the business activity and period accepted by the authorities. Obtain any separate work or professional approval required for what you will personally do, and keep the business and residence records current.

What This Route Is Not

Owning shares without an approved role, buying property, or registering a company alone does not grant residence. This route does not grant citizenship or promise permanent residence.

Next Steps

  1. Confirm that foreign ownership, the business activity, and your personal role are allowed.
  2. Check the current investment and registration rules before spending money.
  3. Gather the company and personal records and obtain the required activity approvals.
  4. Apply for the matching residence permission and check its conditions and renewal requirements.
