Isle of Man Innovator Business Visa
At a glance
The Isle of Man's Innovator visa is for founders who will set up and work in a business approved by the Department for Enterprise. You need a convincing business plan as well as funding. Investing in someone else's business without working in it does not qualify.
- Business approval
- Endorsement from the Isle of Man Department for Enterprise
- Investment
- At least £50,000 per new-business applicant
- English
- B2 or an accepted exemption
Summary
The Isle of Man's Innovator route lets an eligible founder move to the island to develop a new business, with an endorsed plan and an active role in running it. Each new-business applicant needs at least £50,000 in investment funds, with evidence of their source and availability. That money cannot also count as everyday maintenance savings.
Age, English and personal-support requirements apply separately, and the endorsement must continue. An already endorsed business can have different funding rules requiring review of earlier permission. Passive investment or an intention to work mainly outside the approved business does not fit this route.
-
Develop the business for endorsement Prepare the proposal against the Department for Enterprise's criteria.
-
Document the funding For this new-business route, show the required investment and its lawful source separately from personal maintenance.
-
Apply with the endorsement Meet the personal requirements and preserve business-progress evidence for monitoring.
A passive investment does not establish the founder's operating role. Continuing an earlier endorsed business has different funding rules to review.
Eligibility
The business endorsement is essential and must remain in place. The applicant needs the prescribed new-business investment, acceptable evidence of its source and availability, and a genuine role in developing the enterprise.
Personal eligibility includes age, English and maintenance requirements. The investment funds cannot also be counted as the savings intended to support everyday life. A household should prepare its family evidence separately.
More about this route
This pathway focuses on a new business, for which each applicant needs at least £50,000 in investment funds. The rules for continuing an already endorsed business contain an exception to that initial funding requirement and need a separate review of the earlier permission.
What This Route Allows
The visa normally lasts three years and may be extended with continuing eligibility and endorsement. It permits work in the applicant’s business. Settlement may be available after three years only if the separate business and residence requirements are satisfied.
What This Route Is Not
This is not a general job visa, a passive investor permit, or guaranteed settlement after a fixed period. Work outside the applicant’s business is restricted. If endorsement is withdrawn, the immigration permission may be shortened.
Next Steps
- Develop the business proposal against the Department for Enterprise’s current endorsement criteria.
- Document investment funds, their source, personal savings and English ability.
- Apply with the endorsement and retain evidence of business progress for monitoring and any later extension.
