Ghana Diaspora Right of Abode

Ghana Residency
Pathway overview

At a glance

Ghana’s Right of Abode offers qualifying adults of African descent from communities outside Africa a way to live in Ghana permanently. You need a substantial history of living in Ghana, strong local ties, and government approval. African ancestry alone does not qualify you.

Age
At least 18
Residence history
The last 24 months in Ghana, plus at least five years in the seven years before that
Referees
Two qualifying Ghanaians who have known you for at least five years

Summary

Ghana's Right of Abode allows qualifying adults of African descent from communities outside Africa to remain in Ghana on a lasting basis after establishing a life there. Its residence test has two parts: the immediately preceding twenty-four months, plus five years within the seven-year period before those months. It is therefore a later residence option rather than an entry route based solely on ancestry.

Two qualifying Ghanaian referees must have known the applicant for at least five years. Financial standing, contribution to Ghana and character are also assessed. The Minister decides with presidential approval, and a grant gives residence rights rather than Ghanaian citizenship.

Could this pathway work for you?

Eligibility

You must be at least 18. Regulation 13 requires residence in Ghana for the 24 months immediately before applying, plus at least five years during the seven-year period before those 24 months. These are two separate parts of the residence requirement.

You need two qualifying Ghanaian referees: people who can vouch for you and have known you for at least five years. The application also considers your finances, substantial contribution to Ghana, and character. The required declaration addresses convictions carrying at least 12 months’ imprisonment.

Ask Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) how to document your residence history, contribution, finances, and eligibility for this category.

Applying for Right of Abode after living in Ghana
  1. Check your background and residence history Confirm eligibility and both the recent 24 months and the earlier five-year total.
  2. Prepare referees and supporting records Document finances, contribution to Ghana, and character.
  3. Apply through GIS for a government decision Permanent residence and work rights follow only if Right of Abode is granted.

Ancestry alone is not enough; this route requires substantial prior residence and individual approval.

What This Route Allows

If granted, Right of Abode lets you live in Ghana permanently, enter without a visa, and work without a work permit.

What This Route Is Not

This is a later option for someone with the required history in Ghana, not an immediate visa for a first move. It does not grant citizenship. Approval is not automatic: the Minister decides, with presidential approval, after reviewing the application.

Next Steps

  1. Check the category and both parts of your residence history with GIS.
  2. Confirm that your two referees meet the requirements and can support the application.
  3. Prepare financial, contribution, character, and other records on the current checklist.
  4. Apply in person through GIS and wait for the government’s decision.
