Honduras Residence from Independent Income
At a glance
Honduras’s rentista residence is for people with lawful, permanent, stable income of at least USD $2,500 a month, or its Honduran-currency equivalent. You must document the source and receipt through a Honduran financial institution. The category restricts paid work, so a remote salary or freelance income does not automatically qualify.

Summary
Honduras’s independent-income residence is for people who can support their stay with lawful, permanent, stable income and document how it is received. At least USD $2,500 a month, or its Honduran-currency equivalent, is required. Continuing receipts through a Honduran institution support the residence basis; dependents undergo a separate relationship and support review.
-
Verify the lawful recurring income Document the category’s source, permanence, and monthly amount.
-
Prepare the Honduran banking and family evidence Confirm how receipt and support for accompanying relatives will be proved.
-
Complete the residence process Maintain the records needed for registration and renewal.
The monthly figure alone does not establish eligibility or remove restrictions on paid work.
Eligibility
The right financial evidence
Document the assets, securities, or other lawful source generating the income. The law allows qualifying income generated abroad or in Honduras, but it restricts paid work. Do not assume a remote salary or freelance payments qualify simply because they arrive regularly.
The regulation requires evidence of receipt through the Honduran financial system. At renewal, the financial institution’s certification must establish continued receipt of the qualifying amounts. Arrange the documentary and banking requirements before relying on the route.
The cited category rules do not set a fixed retirement age. Family members need separate relationship and support review; the principal threshold should not be presented as a guaranteed budget or automatic approval for the whole household.
Restrictions on paid work
Rentista status does not provide an ordinary right to employment or other paid work. The law permits specified authorized investments and limited professional services to public administration, universities, or other educational institutions. Those exceptions need their own review and do not create a general remote-work permission.
Application and personal records
Use a Honduran legal representative to confirm the current way to submit the application and checklist with the National Migration Institute, known as INM. The regulation requires passport records, applicable foreign and Honduran background evidence, a medical certificate, photographs, and fees. Foreign documents need the required authentication and Spanish translation. Older legislation uses predecessor agencies’ names, so confirm who now issues each record.
What This Route Allows
Approval establishes residence on the rentista basis. Complete registration and keep the resident card and qualifying financial evidence current. Follow the dates and conditions on your approval and resident card.
Honduras separately provides an inmigrado status for people with at least five consecutive qualifying years and the required valid documentation and compliance history. That later application is distinct from the initial rentista approval; neither an anniversary nor occasional visits automatically establishes eligibility.
What This Route Is Not
It is not a general remote-worker visa, a guaranteed tax exemption for every source of money, or automatic citizenship. Review any proposed work or tax treatment separately before depending on it.
If the support is a qualifying foreign pension, compare pensioner residence, which has a different financial threshold.
