Honduras Residence through Marriage
At a glance
If you have been married to, or in a formally recognized union with, a Honduran citizen for at least three years, you can apply for residence. You must prove the relationship’s official start date and that it continues. Informal cohabitation or a plan to marry does not meet the three-year requirement.
- Relationship
- Marriage or a formally recognized union with a Honduran citizen for at least three years
- Family records
- The marriage or union record, the Honduran partner’s birth certificate, and identity records
Summary
A foreign spouse or recognized partner of a Honduran citizen can apply for residence after the marriage or formally recognized union has lasted three years. Civil records and the continuing relationship must support the application. It is not an immediate residence grant following a wedding. Dissolution can require a change of category; the regulation treats a partner’s death differently. Citizenship through marriage to a Honduran by birth is a separate process.
Eligibility
Three years of a recognized relationship
Article 37 counts from the marriage or formal recognition of the union. An engagement or earlier unregistered relationship does not establish this period.
Proof of the continuing relationship
Provide the marriage or recognized-union record, your Honduran partner’s original birth certificate, and a notarized copy of their identity card. The authority also checks the relationship and compliance with family-law obligations.
Your own documents
Prepare the general residence application, identity, background, health, and immigration records. Resolve differences in names or dates across family documents.
-

-
At least 3 years Document the continuing three-year period Prove the partner’s Honduran citizenship and the ongoing relationship.
-

An engagement or informal cohabitation does not start this clock. A wedding does not create immediate residence.
