- Purpose

- Income or support
- Net lawful income of at least €3,000 a month for the six months before entry and throughout the stay.
- Evidence
- Work records, support, housing, and health coverage
Summary
Hungary's White Card allows eligible remote workers to live there while continuing verified foreign employment or work for their own profitable foreign company. Applicants must document net lawful monthly income of at least €3,000 for the six months before entry and throughout the stay.
It is a limited temporary option, normally one year with one further renewal. Ordinary family reunification is generally unavailable, and the card does not lead to Hungary's national residence card. Local employment, Hungarian company ownership and an easy in-country switch to another permit should not be assumed possible.
Eligibility
The applicant must have verified employment with an employer outside Hungary, or own a share of a profitable company outside Hungary, and do the work remotely using digital tools. Hungarian employment and a share in a Hungarian company are excluded.
The applicant must have net lawful income of at least €3,000 a month for the six months before entry and throughout the stay.
More about this route
The route is designed for a temporary stay with an existing working life outside Hungary. Its short duration and family restrictions matter as much as the income test: it generally cannot support family reunification and is not a straightforward route into permanent settlement. Someone moving alone for a defined period may therefore find it a closer fit than a household seeking a lasting base.
-
Qualifying foreign arrangement Verify foreign employment or a share in a profitable foreign company.
-
Remote activity Show the work can be carried out online from Hungary.
-
Income history Document the required net income before entry and throughout the stay.
Hungarian employment is excluded; accompanying relatives need their own immigration basis.
What This Route Allows
The White Card allows residence in Hungary while the holder performs the approved work for the foreign employer or business. It can be granted for up to one year and extended once for up to another year.
That limit defines the planning horizon. The income and foreign-work relationship need to continue during the stay; the initial approval does not turn the card into unrestricted employment permission or an indefinitely renewable residence category.
What This Route Is Not
This is not permission to take an ordinary local job. Family reunification is generally unavailable; a child born in Hungary is a narrow exception.
The White Card does not lead to Hungary’s national residence card. Its in-country change-of-status restrictions also make it unsuitable as a simple stepping stone into another Hungarian permit.
Next Steps
The employment or business evidence should show the foreign organization, the applicant’s role, and how the work can be performed remotely. Financial records need to cover the required period, alongside the insurance and other residence documents.
The immigration authority’s checklist identifies the filing location and procedure. Where a spouse or child intends to move too, their independent immigration position needs to be resolved alongside the White Card application because ordinary family sponsorship is generally unavailable.
