Jersey Partner Visa
At a glance
You may be able to live with your partner in Jersey if their status allows them to support your application. You must prove the relationship and show that your household will have enough money after housing costs. Jersey applies its own financial test, so the UK's spouse-income threshold is not the test to use.
- Sponsor
- British, Irish or qualifying settled person
- Relationship
- Recognized partnership or qualifying two-year relationship
- Age
- Both partners at least 18
Summary
Jersey’s partner visa allows an eligible couple to make their home together on the island. The sponsor’s status and the relationship are central, but so is the household budget after housing costs. Jersey uses its own maintenance assessment rather than simply copying the UK’s headline spouse-income threshold.
Eligibility
The applicant must establish the sponsor’s qualifying status and a genuine continuing relationship, with the intention to live together permanently. The family needs enough income and suitable housing without access to public funds.
Dependent children under eighteen can be considered if they are not living independently. Bringing a child from a previous relationship requires the relevant sole-responsibility evidence. Each family member’s circumstances must be assessed.
More about this route
The official guidance recognizes marriages, civil partnerships and qualifying relationships lasting at least two years. A couple unable to live together may still need to show why and provide convincing evidence that the relationship is comparable to marriage or civil partnership.
-
Sponsor and relationship Confirm qualifying status and a genuine continuing relationship.
-
Budget after housing Document sufficient income and suitable housing under Jersey's rules.
-
Individual family circumstances Include any child dependency and sole-responsibility evidence.
Identify Jersey as the destination in the designated visa process.
What This Route Allows
The published initial spouse or partner permission is two years and nine months. Further permission and eventual settlement require separate applications; the ordinary partner settlement period is five years of qualifying continuous residence on the island.
What This Route Is Not
This is not an immediate right to permanent residence through marriage. Jersey’s rules are aligned with the UK in some respects but are not identical, particularly in the financial assessment. Temporary workers’ partners use the work-dependent provisions instead.
Next Steps
- Establish the sponsor’s status and the correct relationship category.
- Prepare relationship evidence and a household budget using Jersey’s maintenance rules.
- Apply from outside Jersey through the designated visa process and identify Jersey as the destination.
