Summary
People planning to work for themselves in Jamaica can apply through the self-employed work-permit process. The application must explain the activity, investment proposal, and relevant qualifications or business experience. Business ownership is not an exemption from work permission. This is not a fixed-price investment-residence or citizenship program. A broader regional work right may be available to a qualifying CARICOM national.

Company incorporation is a business step, not approval to work in Jamaica.
Eligibility
Your proposed work or business
The cover letter must explain the nature and duration of the proposed activity. Running your own business still counts as work for immigration purposes.
Investment and business plan
The Ministry asks self-employed applicants for investment-proposal details and supporting records, such as proof of ownership and bank statements. Incorporating a company alone does not approve work permission.
Relevant qualifications or experience
Provide applicable academic or professional credentials, accreditation, recommendations, or evidence of business or professional activity abroad. A university degree is not a universal requirement for every self-employed case.
Documents for your application
Prepare the current permit application, certified supporting documents, passport, photos, and police records. Existing companies must supply the business and tax records applicable to the file.
What This Route Allows
A granted permit authorizes the activity and period specified. PICA must also record the appropriate permission to stay; the labor permit and immigration endorsement are different steps.
What This Route Is Not
Business ownership is not an exemption from work permission. This is not a fixed-price investment-residence or citizenship program. A broader regional work right may be available to a qualifying CARICOM national.
Next Steps
Complete the self-employed sections of the current labor form and collect evidence supporting the activity. Coordinate the permit decision with PICA before starting work.
