Montenegro Family Residence
At a glance
A spouse and eligible children may apply to join a Montenegrin citizen or qualifying resident. Each family member needs permission to live there. The resident's status and the household's ability to support itself are part of the application.
- Family covered
- Spouse and children under 18, including adopted and stepchildren
- Sponsor
- A Montenegrin citizen or foreign national with a residence category permitting reunification
- Support
- Money to support the household, housing, and health coverage
Summary
A qualifying citizen or resident's spouse and children under eighteen can apply to live with them in Montenegro, including eligible adopted children and stepchildren. The sponsor's category must allow reunification; seasonal-work permission does not provide that basis.
Each relative needs their own application with relationship, household-support, housing and health evidence. Foreign family records may require authentication and translation. Work rights follow the permission actually issued and cannot simply be inferred from the sponsor's ability to work.
Eligibility
Immediate family includes a spouse and children under 18, including stepchildren and adopted children, of an eligible sponsor living in Montenegro.
The sponsor must be a Montenegrin citizen or hold a residence status that allows reunification. A seasonal-work permit cannot support family reunification under this route.
The family must document the relationship and meet the applicable support, housing, and health-coverage requirements. Marriage and birth records from abroad may need authentication and translation before they can be accepted in Montenegro.
More about this route
The type of residence held by the sponsor matters. Seasonal employment cannot support this ordinary family route, while a qualifying resident in another category may be able to sponsor. Work rights for the joining family member also need to be checked against the permission actually issued, rather than inferred from the principal resident’s ability to work.
-
Eligible citizen or resident Check that the sponsor's category permits reunification.
-
Immediate family Document the spouse or qualifying child relationship.
-
Household arrangements Prepare support, housing, and health-coverage evidence.
A seasonal-work permit cannot support this ordinary family route.
What This Route Allows
A family permit allows you to live with the sponsoring relative in Montenegro. Permission to work depends on the category and any additional employment requirements. The joining relative should have their own status documented; the sponsor’s residence card does not serve as the family member’s permission.
What This Route Is Not
The approved family category determines the rights granted. Living with a relative is not itself citizenship, and a later change in the relationship or the sponsor’s status can affect renewal.
Next Steps
The sponsor’s citizenship or qualifying residence category establishes whether family reunification is available. The family can then prepare marriage, birth, adoption, or stepchild records as appropriate, together with support, housing, and insurance evidence. The permission actually issued to the joining relative should also be checked before relying on local work to fund the household.
