Nicaragua Passive-Income Residence
At a glance
Nicaragua may grant temporary residence to someone with documented ongoing income from assets or investments. The accepted income and family requirements need confirmation; savings alone do not establish a regular income stream.

- Documented recurring income from assets

- A bank balance alone is not recurring income
Summary
Regular lawful income from investments, rent, or other assets can support temporary residence in Nicaragua. You need evidence of a continuing income stream, rather than a bank balance alone. Confirm the current income and family requirements with immigration before applying.
The 2024 reforms repealed the former Law 694 program. Its old income thresholds and tax incentives should not be treated as current benefits.
Eligibility
The source, amount, and continuing availability of the income need documentary support. A bank balance alone does not establish a recurring income stream.
The previous Law 694 thresholds and benefits were repealed in 2024. The present category, income evidence, and household requirements need confirmation with DGME or the responsible consulate; an old online guide does not establish current eligibility.
DGME, Nicaragua’s immigration authority, must accept your passport, background records, and evidence for the category. Foreign documents may need authentication and Spanish translation. The current checklist and entry requirements should be confirmed with DGME or the responsible Nicaraguan consulate.
-
Continuing lawful income Document investment, rent, or other qualifying asset income.
-
Current requirements Confirm the category, household standard, and records with DGME or the consulate.
-
Residence application Provide accepted income, identity, and background evidence.
A bank balance alone is insufficient; repealed Law 694 figures and benefits should not be reused.
What This Route Allows
An approved applicant can live in Nicaragua on the accepted income basis. Temporary residence can be issued for three months to one year and renewed while the relevant conditions continue.
The route depends on the documented income remaining suitable for the category. It does not itself establish a right to take a local job or a guaranteed path to permanent residence.
What This Route Is Not
This is not the former tax-incentive package or a promise of permanent residence. It does not establish permission for a local job.
Next Steps
- Ask DGME or the responsible consulate for the current income and household requirements.
- Gather records proving the source, amount, and continuing availability of your income.
- Prepare the personal documents and any required authentication and Spanish translations.
- Apply under the current category and check the renewal conditions on approval.
