Summary
The Netherlands researcher residence permit is for researchers, doctoral candidates, and some mobility researchers whose work is hosted by a recognized Dutch research institution.
This is a host-based route. The Dutch research institution, host agreement, employment contract, project approval, and academic fit are usually more important than the applicant's general interest in research.
Eligibility
You may be a fit if:
- You are not Dutch and are not using EU, EEA, or Swiss free-movement rights.
- You will carry out research or doctoral work in the Netherlands.
- A recognized Dutch research institution will host or employ you.
- You have a host agreement, employment contract, or comparable formal arrangement.
- You have the academic background needed for the research or doctoral role.
- You can meet the income, identity, and general residence requirements.
What This Route Allows
This route can allow you to live in the Netherlands while carrying out the approved research work. It may also support EU research mobility in some cases.
What This Route Is Not
This is not a general visa for independent research, remote academic work, or informal collaboration. The recognized Dutch sponsor is the anchor.
Next Steps
- Confirm the Dutch institution is a recognized sponsor for research.
- Secure a host agreement, employment contract, doctoral position, or formal research arrangement.
- Confirm the project and academic background requirements.
- Gather sponsor, contract, degree, passport, income, and project documents.
- Have the Dutch institution support the IND application.
