Summary

Portugal replaced its broad job-seeker visa with a qualified job-seeker visa on 23 October 2025. The current law limits it to holders of specialized technical skills seeking highly qualified professional work. It no longer authorizes a general search for any employed job.

The visa is valid for 120 days, can be extended for 60 more days, and permits one entry. It includes an appointment for the residence process within the initial 120-day period. However, the law requires a ministerial regulation to define the qualifying specialized technical skills. As of 15 August 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs says this visa is not yet available at Portuguese consular offices because that regulation is still pending.

Eligibility

Once operational criteria apply, the applicant must fit the official definition of specialized technical skills and meet the general visa conditions. The file should be expected to include qualification and experience evidence, a valid passport, criminal-record evidence, return transport, means of support, insurance, and the other current consular documents.

The visa allows work only in a highly qualified professional activity during its validity. To obtain residence, the holder must begin qualifying work within the visa period, attend the scheduled process, and meet the general temporary-residence conditions. A job that is not highly qualified does not satisfy the current statute merely because it is full-time or difficult to fill.

As of 15 August 2026, the authoritative statute requires the skills definition to be made by joint ministerial regulation. A prospective applicant should ask the consulate for the number and text of the regulation it is applying; old checklists for the pre-October-2025 visa are not reliable.

The future visa will be limited to specialized technical skills and highly qualified professional work. The old general job-seeker route cannot be used for a new application, and applicants should wait for the implementing regulation and an official consular opening notice.

Timing: The statutory change has applied since 23 October 2025, but the replacement visa cannot be used reliably until the government publishes the qualifying-skills regulation and consulates open the category. No launch date has been announced.

What This Route Allows

When issued, the visa permits one entry into Portugal, a search for qualifying highly skilled work, and performance of that highly qualified work during the visa period. After qualifying work begins, the holder may seek a residence permit if the general conditions are met.

The visa itself is not a residence permit and does not create a family-reunification right. Family options arise only after a residence permit is granted and depend on the type of permit issued and the Article 98 rules then applicable.

What This Route Is Not

It is not the former open job-seeker visa and is not permission to take any ordinary job. Information describing a broad 120-day search followed by ordinary Article 88 employed residence is obsolete for new applications after 22 October 2025.

It is not renewable indefinitely. If the holder reaches the maximum validity without starting qualifying work and the follow-on residence process, they must leave Portugal. A new visa for the same purpose cannot be requested until one year after the earlier visa expires.
