Summary
If your spouse or parent is a foreign resident in Taiwan, you may be able to join them. This route covers a foreign spouse or child under 18, provided the resident’s immigration status allows them to bring family.
Each family member needs their own application. Your permission to work also needs a separate check.
Eligibility
You must be the resident’s spouse or child under 18. Prepare a marriage or birth certificate and any required custody records.
Your spouse or parent must hold an accepted residence or permanent-residence document. If they hold an Alien Resident Certificate (ARC), Taiwan’s residence card for foreign residents, or another time-limited residence permit, it must have more than six months of validity left.
For a child’s application, a parent whose own ARC is based on being a dependent family member cannot sponsor the child under this checklist.
Taiwan’s Bureau of Consular Affairs (BOCA) also sets passport restrictions, document certification and translation rules, and health requirements or exemptions. Check these before applying.
Plan the entry process before traveling. The spouse checklist does not allow you to arrive on an ordinary visa-free visit and switch to this residence route inside Taiwan.
-
Check your family member’s status Confirm that their residence category, permit validity, and your relationship qualify.
-
Apply using the correct entry process Prepare certified family records; ordinary visa-free entry does not allow the spouse conversion.
-
Complete your own residence card After approval, apply for your ARC on time and check work and renewal rules.
Each spouse or child has a separate application. The resident’s approval does not automatically cover family members.
What This Route Allows
Approval lets you live with your spouse or parent for the period granted. Apply for your own ARC within the applicable 30-day deadline.
Your work rights depend on your family member’s immigration category and your own status. You may qualify for a work-permit exemption, but check before taking a job.
Before renewing, check what happens if your spouse or parent changes status, or if a child reaches the age limit.
What This Route Is Not
This is not an automatic route for parents or adult children. Holding an ARC does not mean someone can bring every relative, and approval for one person does not cover the whole family.
Joining a Republic of China (Taiwan) citizen with household registration follows a separate route. Household registration is Taiwan’s official population record. A short family visit also uses a different application from residence.
Next Steps
- Check your spouse’s or parent’s exact residence category and remaining permit validity.
- Gather the relationship records, their residence documents, and any required financial or housing evidence.
- Confirm certification, translation, health, and entry requirements before filing.
- After approval, complete your ARC application on time and check your own work rights and renewal conditions.
