Ukraine Spouse Residence Permit

Ukraine Residency
Pathway overview

At a glance

If you are married to a Ukrainian citizen, you may apply for temporary residence through that relationship. You need proof of the marriage, your spouse's identity, and your right to apply from your current situation. The marriage certificate itself does not give residence permission.

Summary

A foreign spouse can apply for temporary residence to live with a Ukrainian citizen, using a recognized marriage and a lawful basis for filing. A foreign marriage may need authentication and translation, and any exception to the citizen spouse's attendance must be supported under the applicable guidance.

This can address the immediate family stay before the ordinary permanent-immigration marriage period is met. The temporary permit is normally issued for up to a year; permanent residence and employment authorization have their own requirements.

The marriage supports a separate residence application
  1. Recognized marriage Prepare the marriage record and spouse's Ukrainian citizenship evidence.
  2. Lawful filing arrangements Confirm visa, attendance, authentication, and translation requirements.
  3. Temporary residence Submit the application and review the issued permission.

The marriage certificate does not itself issue a permit; permanent immigration is a separate route.

Eligibility

The central requirement is a recognized marriage to a Ukrainian citizen. A marriage registered abroad may need authentication and translation, and its validity is assessed under Ukraine’s private-international-law rules.

The foreign spouse still needs lawful status and the general residence documents. Any exception to the citizen spouse’s attendance must be supported under the current guidance rather than assumed from the fact that the country is under martial law.

More about this route

This temporary route is distinct from permanent immigration through a citizen spouse, which normally requires the marriage to have lasted more than two years. Keeping the two processes separate helps a newly married couple understand what is available now and what may become available later.

What This Route Allows

Approval provides temporary family residence, normally for up to one year under the general rule, with further permission possible while the conditions remain satisfied. A later permanent-immigration application follows its own relationship-duration and eligibility requirements.

What This Route Is Not

This is not automatic citizenship, immediate permanent residence or an unrestricted work permit. It also does not cover an unmarried partner merely because the couple lives together. Employment needs the applicable work authorization or exemption.

Next Steps

  1. Gather the marriage record and evidence of the spouse’s Ukrainian citizenship.
  2. Confirm the visa, attendance and filing arrangements for the case.
  3. Apply for temporary residence and review a later permanent-immigration route separately when relevant.
