Summary
The UK Representative of an Overseas Business visa is now mainly a work route for employees of overseas newspapers, news agencies, or broadcasting organisations posted to the UK on a long-term assignment. It requires you to stay employed by that overseas employer.
It is no longer the general "sole representative opening a first UK branch" route. GOV.UK points people setting up a first UK branch to the UK Expansion Worker route under Global Business Mobility instead.
Eligibility
You may be a fit if:
- You are an employee of an overseas newspaper, news agency, or broadcasting organisation.
- You are being posted to the UK on a long-term assignment.
- You will remain employed full-time by that overseas employer.
- You can support yourself and meet the English-language requirement.
What This Route Allows
The visa is initially granted for 3 years and may be extended for another 2 years. GOV.UK says holders can work full-time for the overseas employer, bring eligible dependants, extend the visa, and apply for settlement after 5 years if they continue to qualify.
What This Route Is Not
- The route for setting up a first UK branch — use UK Expansion Worker under Global Business Mobility for that.
- A self-employment route; GOV.UK says holders cannot work for themselves or another business.
- A guaranteed path to settlement; settlement depends on continuing to meet the requirements.
Next Steps
- Confirm your role is a long-term UK posting for an overseas newspaper, news agency, or broadcasting organisation.
- Confirm you will remain employed full-time by that overseas employer while in the UK.
- Check the current English-language and maintenance requirements on GOV.UK.
- If you are instead opening a first UK branch, review the UK Expansion Worker route.
- Prepare your supporting documents and apply through the official GOV.UK route.
