Zambia Spouse Residence
At a glance
If your spouse is a Zambian citizen, holds permanent residence, or has accepted established-resident status, you can apply for a Spouse Permit. Your spouse must consent to the application and you need evidence of financial support. A temporary employment permit alone is not a qualifying sponsor status for this category.
- Qualifying spouse
- A citizen, accepted established resident, or permanent-residence holder
- Temporary work permit
- Not a qualifying sponsor status for this particular category
- Documents
- Marriage certificate, spouse's consent and status, and financial support
Summary
An eligible foreign spouse can apply for a Zambian Spouse Permit to live with their husband or wife, with the sponsor's consent and proof of marriage, qualifying status, and household support. It covers the listed citizen, permanent-resident, or accepted established-resident categories; a temporary employment permit alone is insufficient for this particular route.
A later Residence Permit application has its own conditions after at least five years, while work and long-absence rules also need confirmation. Immigration still publishes the older checklist during the transition to the Immigration Control Act, 2026; this review did not verify the separate order needed for that Act to take effect.
Eligibility
Provide a certified marriage certificate, your spouse's consent, and proof of their citizenship, established-resident status, or Residence Permit. Ask Immigration to confirm the accepted status if you are unsure which category your spouse holds.
Prepare your passport, photo, application letter, and accepted financial-support evidence. Confirm the permit term and its work and activity restrictions.
-
Check your spouse’s status Confirm that it qualifies under the rules currently applied.
-
Prepare the family records Gather marriage, consent, support, and identity evidence.
-
Apply for the Spouse Permit Check its term, work restrictions, and absence rules.
Confirm current requirements during the 2026 law transition; permanent residence is a separate later application.
What This Route Allows
If approved, you can live in Zambia as a spouse for the period granted. A later Residence Permit application after at least five years on a Spouse Permit is a separate process with its own requirements.
What This Route Is Not
Marriage does not automatically grant citizenship or permanent residence. Section 18 of the 2026 Act requires separate permission for employment. Long absences can also end spouse status. Confirm the rules currently applied before working or leaving Zambia for an extended period.
Next Steps
- Confirm the current rules and that your marriage and your spouse's status qualify.
- Gather the marriage certificate, spouse's consent, status documents, and financial and personal records.
- Apply for the Spouse Permit and check its work, travel, and renewal conditions.
