Albania Family Residence Through a Citizen
At a glance
Close family members of an Albanian citizen may obtain renewable residence by documenting the relationship and meeting the residence requirements. Spouses, qualifying partners and children, and certain dependent parents are covered; extended relatives do not qualify simply because they are family.

Summary
Family residence in Albania allows eligible relatives of an Albanian citizen to join them, using civil records and any required dependency or custody evidence to prove the relationship. The usual first permit is up to one year, followed by two-year renewals while the conditions continue.
Eligibility
The sponsor must be an Albanian citizen. Article 40 and the family definition in Article 3 cover:
- A spouse or a stable, documented cohabiting partner.
- Qualifying unmarried minor children, including adopted children and relevant custody arrangements.
- Unmarried adult children unable to meet their needs because of their health.
- Dependent first-degree ascendants, such as parents, without family support in their country of origin, within the legal family definition.
Prepare the sponsor's identity document and the relevant birth, marriage, and other family records. A spouse's qualifying minor child under legal guardianship may also be included. For minors joining one parent, document the other parent's consent or sole legal authority. Partners need the prescribed cohabitation evidence. Health and dependency grounds need evidence, not just a statement that a relative would like to move.
General entry and residence requirements, suitable housing, and health coverage apply. Confirm the financial evidence for the particular family category rather than assuming the foreign-resident sponsor's checklist applies unchanged. A sham marriage is a refusal or cancellation ground.
Where a D/BF family visa is required, the partner checklist calls for a notarized statement of more than 12 months of cohabitation and family-status evidence that both partners are unmarried.
-
Confirm Albanian citizenship Obtain the sponsor's identity and citizenship evidence.
-
Check which family rule applies Check marriage, documented partnership, child, or dependent-parent conditions.
-
Prove any additional requirements Provide custody, consent, cohabitation, health, or dependency records where the category requires them.
-
Complete the residence process Prepare entry, housing, coverage, and authenticated records for e-Albania and card required steps.
Extended relatives do not qualify merely through a family connection. The evidence must establish a covered relationship and its specific conditions.
What This Route Allows
The normal first family permit lasts up to one year and may be renewed for two years while the conditions continue. Family residence can carry the economic-activity right described in Article 41(7); check that right on the issued permit and any separate occupational licensing rules.
EU citizens have a separate residence-registration system under Article 33/1, with its own rules for qualifying family members. Check that system before applying for an ordinary residence permit. U.S. and Kosovo citizens have a general five-year first-permit provision under Article 33(5); confirm how it applies to your category and rely on the validity actually issued.
What This Route Is Not
This does not cover cousins, siblings, or other extended relatives merely because of kinship. Residence through a citizen is not citizenship and does not waive any separate citizenship application. A relationship change can affect renewal, although autonomous residence and protective exceptions may apply under Article 42.
