Albania Family Residence Through a Resident

Summary

Eligible relatives of a foreign resident can apply to join them in Albania when the sponsor’s permit category, remaining validity, and renewal rights support a family move. The household must also document the relationship and support. Relatives normally apply from abroad; the in-country exception is for qualifying humanitarian circumstances.

Eligibility

The sponsor must have a permit issued for at least one year and be eligible to renew it. This is a permit-duration requirement, not a requirement to have already spent one year in Albania. Seasonal-worker sponsors are excluded.

The legal family categories include spouses, stable documented partners, qualifying minor children, and certain dependent relatives. Article 41 also permits applications by unmarried children up to age 30 if the sponsor covers all living costs. Adult children and ascendants unable to meet their needs because of health may qualify exceptionally; the relevant health, dependency, and family evidence is required.

The sponsor must provide suitable housing, health coverage, and stable support for the whole household without social assistance. The general financial-evidence rule accepts an Albanian-bank personal or family deposit of at least ALL 300,000 per person for one calendar year, or monthly income at least equal to Albania's current minimum wage. The household must still have adequate support; confirm the evidence and current wage applicable when filing.

Joining relatives ordinarily must be outside Albania when the family-reunification procedure begins. In-country applications require an applicable humanitarian exception. Prepare the sponsor's permit, relationship records, any partner cohabitation declaration, child consent or custody documents, and evidence specific to dependency or health grounds.

Where a D/BF family visa is required, the partner checklist calls for a notarized statement of more than 12 months of cohabitation and family-status evidence that both partners are unmarried.

Check your family member's Albanian permit
  1. Check that the permit allows family to join It must have been issued for at least one year and be renewable. Seasonal-worker permits do not qualify.
  2. Check who can apply Review the relationship and any age, support, health, or financial-dependence requirements.
  3. Gather household and family records Prepare housing, insurance, financial, relationship, and consent documents.
  4. Apply and renew when needed Complete the family, visa, and residence-card steps and keep meeting the conditions.

The permit must have been issued for at least one year. Your family member does not have to have already lived in Albania for a year.

What This Route Allows

Article 41 normally gives a renewable one-year first permit. For family of an AL Blue Card holder, the first permit has the same validity as the sponsor's Blue Card. Family residence permits economic activity without prior employment-agency approval unless another law prohibits it; that right is recorded on the permit.

Article 42 provides autonomous residence in certain circumstances, including after the qualifying family-residence period. It requires a separate assessment.

What This Route Is Not

This is separate from family residence through an Albanian citizen, the EU-citizen family-card system under Article 33/1, and refugee-family procedures. A tourist visit or short permit does not establish a qualifying sponsor. Family residence does not automatically confer permanent residence or citizenship.

Next Steps

  1. Check the sponsor's permit category, original validity, and renewal eligibility.
  2. Confirm the precise family relationship and whether an exceptional category or filing-location rule applies.
  3. Prepare support, housing, health-coverage, civil-record, and consent evidence.
  4. Follow the family-reunification and visa procedure, then complete the e-Albania residence application and card required steps.
  5. Keep the sponsor and family conditions current and renew before the permit expires.
