Guatemala Residence from Independent Income
At a glance
A qualifying stable income of at least USD $1,250 a month, plus USD $300 for each dependent, can let you apply directly for permanent residence in Guatemala. This rentista category is for living without paid work. You must document an accepted income source; a remote salary or savings balance alone is not enough.

Summary
Guatemala’s independent-income residence category is for people with an accepted income stream that can continue supporting their household. A savings balance or plans to earn a salary are not equivalent to the required income stream. Retirement pensions and ongoing foreign employment have their own Guatemalan residence categories.

Eligibility
A qualifying source and enough continuing income
The regulation lists qualifying bank and business investments, property-income or specified religious or academic support remittances, and certain securities. The general rule concerns stable income generated abroad, with specific provisions for qualifying securities issued through Guatemalan institutions or the state. Have the exact source and capital history checked rather than assuming every domestic investment qualifies.
The principal amount and dependent additions must be documented. A family of three relying on one main applicant needs USD $1,850 a month for this test. Where the income is in another currency, the regulation requires evidence of its conversion to US dollars. It does not impose a fixed minimum age for this category.
A plan that works without paid work
The residence regulation requires the applicant to live without doing paid work. If wages or freelance work are essential to your budget, review an employment route instead of relying on the account into which the money is paid.
Personal records and accompanying family
The current checklist asks for a valid passport and legalized copy, applicable background evidence, a certificate of your latest immigration entry, and payment. Additional civil records may be needed. Foreign documents generally need an apostille or legalization and a Spanish translation; check their permitted age before ordering them. You submit the application in person to IGM, Guatemala’s immigration authority.
Dependents need their own applications and relationship evidence. Adult children cannot be assumed to qualify simply because a parent meets the income test; the regulation points economically dependent adult children pursuing university study toward the student category. Confirm the appropriate basis for each family member.
What This Route Allows
Approval grants permanent residence without first completing the ordinary temporary-residence period. Complete immigration registration and the applicable Guatemalan identity-document procedure after approval.
You still have duties as a permanent resident, including annual data updates and the applicable annual foreign-resident fee. The regulation requires rentistas to provide evidence of continuing income every five years. Check ongoing registration, changes of circumstances, and absence rules before planning extended time abroad.
What This Route Is Not
It is not a savings-balance test, a work permit, or automatic citizenship. Meeting the monthly amount does not replace proof of the correct income source or the rest of the application.
Someone receiving a qualifying retirement or social-security pension should compare the separate pensioner route. A person continuing with a foreign employer can instead examine foreign-employer residence.

- Calculate the additional income and appropriate application for every accompanying family member.
