Latvia Residency
Pathway overview

At a glance

A spouse, child under 18, or other eligible relative may be able to join a resident in Latvia. The resident must hold a permit that allows family to join them and support the invitation. You need family records and any required custody documents.

Summary

Latvia’s family residence allows a qualifying spouse or minor child to join a resident, using that person’s invitation and evidence of the relationship. For student sponsors, current rules limit family sponsorship to NATO-country citizens or doctoral students. Russian and Belarusian applicants face additional restrictions and must fit an exception.

Could this pathway work for you?

Eligibility

The family route includes a spouse and minor children of a qualifying resident. The application needs accepted relationship records, custody evidence where relevant, and the sponsor’s invitation.

The sponsor’s current permit must allow the family application. Since September 15, 2026, a student can bring family on the student basis only if the student is a NATO-country citizen or a doctoral student.

The family must document the relationship and meet the applicable support, housing, and health-coverage requirements. Marriage and birth records from abroad may need authentication and translation before they can be accepted in Latvia.

Latvia restricts residence applications from Russian and Belarusian nationals. The applicant needs a permitted basis or exception covering the specific application, together with any required entry permission. A second citizenship does not automatically resolve the issue.

More about this route

The September 2026 rules make that status particularly important for students: the student-family basis is limited to NATO-country citizens or doctoral students. Restrictions on Russian and Belarusian applications add a separate consideration for affected family members. A relationship can support a case only when the current rules allow that particular application.

Check the sponsor's present permit before arranging the family move
  1. Verify the sponsor and invitation Confirm that the actual Latvian permission supports the family application.
  2. Resolve any student-specific condition For that basis, check the current NATO-nationality or doctoral-study rule.
  3. Prepare relationship and household evidence Document the spouse or minor child, custody, support, housing, and coverage.

Nationality and filing restrictions require a separate review. The relationship alone does not make a restricted application available.

Integration duties will depend on the family member’s circumstances

Current official stage: Immigration Law section 48; commencement scheduled for December 31, 2027

The December 2027 rule can cover adult family residents with permits totaling at least 18 months. Children under 18 and family members of specified exempt residents, including qualifying full-time students, are exempt. A family permit alone does not establish whether the duty applies.

Timing: Section 48 takes effect December 31, 2027. Cabinet rules will govern the program’s content and organization. The commencement date does not by itself give every resident the same course-completion deadline.

What This Route Allows

A family permit allows you to live with the sponsoring relative in Latvia. Permission to work depends on the category and any additional employment requirements. The joining relative should have their own status documented; the sponsor’s residence card does not serve as the family member’s permission.

What This Route Is Not

The approved family category determines the rights granted. Living with a relative is not itself citizenship, and a later change in the relationship or the sponsor’s status can affect renewal.

Next Steps

The sponsor’s permit and invitation need to support the proposed family application under the current law. For a student household, the nationality or doctoral-study condition should be established before preparing the rest of the file. Relationship, custody, and household records remain necessary, as does an applicable exception where nationality restrictions affect the applicant.
