Summary

Poland's researcher residence permit is for a person from outside the EU, EEA, and Switzerland who will carry out genuine scientific research or development work in Poland for more than 3 months. The route is built around a written admission agreement or contract with a Polish research institution approved to host foreign researchers.

A graduate degree or general academic interest is not enough on its own. Before filing, there must be a real host, a defined research or development project, and documents showing that the applicant's background fits the work.

What This Route Allows

The permit allows residence in Poland for the approved research or development activity. It is granted for more than 3 months and up to 3 years, usually in line with the length of the project and agreement.

Researchers already holding a qualifying researcher permit from another EU country may have separate short-term or long-term mobility options instead of starting with the ordinary Polish researcher application. Those rules depend on the existing permit, host notifications, duration, and family circumstances.

After completing the Polish research or development work, a person who is still lawfully in Poland on the researcher basis may apply immediately for a one-time, 9-month post-research permit to seek employment or prepare a business. This is a separate application, not an automatic extension. The applicant needs proof that the research ended, health insurance, housing, and evidence of an active job search or business preparations. Someone who has already found an employer ready to hire them should instead evaluate the appropriate work-residence permit.

Time on this permit can form part of a longer Polish residence history, subject to the counting and continuity rules of the later status being sought.

  1. Ask the Polish host to confirm that it is approved to receive a foreign researcher under this route.
  2. Agree the project title, purpose, duration, funding, working conditions, and each party's obligations before signing.
  3. Gather the master's or equivalent degree, transcripts, CV, professional records, and any evidence connecting your expertise to the project. Arrange sworn Polish translations when required.
  4. Obtain the admission agreement or qualifying contract and the host's required undertaking and supporting records.
  5. Gather insurance, funds, return-travel, passport, photograph, and legal-stay documents.
  6. File electronically through MOS before your legal stay expires. Since 27 April 2026, temporary-residence applications generally must be submitted through MOS and signed through login.gov.pl. Save the UPO and be ready to show originals and give biometrics when called by the voivode.
  7. If you already hold a researcher permit from another EU country, check the dedicated researcher-mobility rules before filing the ordinary application.
