Summary
Poland has a one-time temporary residence permit for some people who have just completed scientific research or development work there. It gives the former researcher 9 months to seek employment or prepare to start a business in Poland.
The formal category is a temporary residence permit due to other circumstances after completed scientific research or development work. “Poland Post-Research Job Search” is a shorter plain-English name for that specific bridge.
This is not a general job-seeker visa. It is only for someone who completed qualifying work in Poland while lawfully staying under the Polish temporary residence permit for scientific research or development work. It requires a new application immediately after the research ends; it is not an automatic extension of the researcher permit.
Eligibility
The route may fit when all of the following are true:
- You are a third-country national or stateless person rather than a Polish, EU, EEA, or Swiss citizen using free-movement rights.
- You completed scientific research or development work in Poland.
- At the time of that work, you held the Polish temporary residence permit for scientific research or development work. Completing an ordinary Polish degree or carrying out research under a different status does not by itself meet this test.
- You apply immediately after the research or development work ends, while you are still lawfully staying in Poland on the researcher basis.
- Your purpose for the next 9 months is to seek employment or prepare to start a business in Poland.
- You have health insurance, a right to suitable accommodation in Poland, enough money for living costs, and the required funds for return travel.
- You can obtain a document from the Polish scientific institution confirming that the research or development work was completed.
- You can show that you are actively seeking employment or taking real steps to prepare a business.
The official MOS page publishes the current financial amounts and required evidence. Those figures can change, so check the live page instead of relying on an older checklist.
The timing rule is unusually important. This is designed as an immediate bridge from the researcher permit. A person who has already left Poland, allowed the qualifying stay to end, or is applying from abroad should not assume this route remains available.
The official guidance also says this permit should not be granted when the person is already working or has found an employer ready to employ them. In that situation, the appropriate work and residence route should be considered instead.
What This Route Allows
If granted, the permit allows the former researcher to remain in Poland for 9 months for either or both of these purposes:
- actively seeking employment; or
- preparing to start a business.
It is granted once and cannot be renewed for the same purpose. The 9 months are therefore a transition period, not a long-term residence plan. Before it expires, the holder needs to qualify for another status, such as an appropriate work-residence permit, EU Blue Card, business-activity permit, or another residence category that fits the new circumstances.
A complete application filed correctly and on time can generally protect the applicant's lawful stay while the voivode decides the case. That procedural protection is not the same as having already received the 9-month permit, and it does not guarantee approval.
The post-research permit creates time to search and prepare. It should not be read as automatic permission to start every form of employment or business activity. Before beginning paid work or operating a business, confirm that the current residence document and the separate Polish work or business rules allow that activity. Once an employer is ready to hire, the person should move promptly toward the correct employment-based status rather than treating this permit as a substitute.
What This Route Is Not
- It is not Poland's main researcher residence permit. That route covers the research project itself; this route begins only after the qualifying work ends.
- It is not a post-study permit for anyone who completes a Polish bachelor's, master's, or doctoral program. Ordinary graduates must examine the rules that apply to graduates rather than assuming the researcher bridge applies.
- It is not a way to move to Poland before finding a research host.
- It is not intended for a person who is still carrying out the research project. The existing researcher status should normally cover that period.
- It is not the right route when the applicant is already employed or already has an employer ready to hire them.
- It cannot normally be started from abroad.
- It is not renewable and does not itself grant permanent residence.
- It does not guarantee that a later work, Blue Card, or business application will be approved. Each follow-on route has its own requirements.
Next Steps
- Ask the Polish scientific institution for a formal document confirming that the research or development work has been completed.
- Check the end date of the research activity and the current researcher residence status. Because the application must immediately follow the research while the stay is lawful, resolve any timing uncertainty before relying on this route.
- Decide whether the plan is active employment search, business preparation, or both. Keep evidence such as applications, interviews, recruitment correspondence, a business concept, market research, or professional advice appropriate to the plan.
- Gather the current MOS application documents. These generally include identity and residence records, photographs, proof of the completed research, health insurance, accommodation, funds for living costs and return travel, and evidence of job-search or business-preparation activity.
- File through the MOS system with the competent voivode while you are in Poland and your stay is still lawful. Since 27 April 2026, temporary-residence applications generally use electronic MOS filing and login.gov.pl. Keep the official electronic acknowledgment and follow instructions about originals, fingerprints, or an in-person appearance.
- If you already have an employer ready to hire you, do not use this route as a holding permit. Check the appropriate employment residence category immediately.
- Plan the follow-on status from the beginning. Nine months is short, and this permit cannot be extended for another job-search period.
