Summary

Uganda’s Class D trading permit is for a shareholder seeking to live in the country while actively carrying out general trade. The application needs company registration, a trading license, tax-compliance evidence, and the company’s recent bank statements. Other industries or a short business visit follow different categories, so the proposed activity must fit this permit.

Could this pathway work for you?

Eligibility

Confirm that the business fits general trade and that foreign ownership and your role are allowed. Obtain company registration, a trading license, and tax-compliance records.

Prepare proof of your shareholding, the company's bank statements for the last three months, your passport, police clearance, and an application letter.

Running a trading business in Uganda
  1. Check the trading category Confirm that Class D covers your business and role.
  2. Gather company and personal records Include ownership evidence and three months of bank statements.
  3. Apply for your permit Follow the approved activity and permit dates.

A company registration alone does not give you residence permission.

What This Route Allows

You can live in Uganda for the approved trading activity and permit period, with any separate work or professional approval still required. Published permit options are six, 12, 24, or 36 months.

What This Route Is Not

Class D is not a permit for every industry or a short business-visit visa. Registering a company, passively holding shares, or buying property alone does not grant residence. The route does not grant citizenship or guarantee permanent residence.

Next Steps

  1. Confirm that Class D covers the business and your role.
  2. Gather company, trading-license, tax, bank, ownership, and personal records.
  3. Apply for the permit and any other required approvals. Keep business records and permissions current.
