Uganda Spouse Residence
At a glance
If your spouse is a Ugandan citizen or holds accepted permission to work, study, or live in Uganda, you may be able to join them on a dependent pass. You need your own application and proof of the marriage.
- Who can apply
- The spouse of a Ugandan citizen or qualifying foreign resident
- Foreign spouse's status
- An accepted work, study, or residence document
- Marriage evidence
- A marriage certificate
Summary
Uganda’s dependent pass allows a foreign spouse to join a citizen or eligible resident, using a marriage certificate and proof of the sponsor’s citizenship or accepted immigration permission. A foreign sponsor’s work, study, or residence document must support the family application; the marriage alone does not issue the dependent’s pass.
Eligibility
Provide your marriage certificate and your spouse's passport or citizen ID. If your spouse is a foreign resident, include their current qualifying immigration document.
Your passport must have at least six months left before it expires. Include proof of your current lawful immigration status and the required dependent-application records. Documents must be in English or have accepted translations.
-
Check your spouse’s status Confirm that their citizenship or immigration document qualifies.
-
Gather marriage and identity records Include current status and any needed translations.
-
Apply for your own pass Follow the dependent conditions and renewal date.
Your spouse’s status supports the application but does not automatically issue your pass.
What This Route Allows
If approved, you can live in Uganda as a dependent spouse for the period granted in connection with your spouse's status.
What This Route Is Not
Marriage or your spouse's permit does not automatically give you a pass. Activities outside the dependent permission need separate authorization. This residence route does not grant citizenship.
Next Steps
- Confirm that your marriage and your spouse's citizenship or permit qualify.
- Gather marriage, identity, immigration-status, and any required support documents and translations.
- Apply for your dependent pass and follow its conditions and renewal dates.
