Summary
South Africa’s financially independent category offers permanent residence to eligible people with substantial net assets. The application must prove the qualifying net worth through reliable asset-and-debt records and an accountant’s certification. A separate ZAR 120,000 government payment falls due after approval. This category does not require buying a particular South African property or business.
Eligibility
Under section 27(f), you need verified net worth—assets minus debts—of at least ZAR 12,000,000. Provide the required accountant's certification and reliable evidence of the assets and debts.
You must meet the character and other immigration requirements and pay ZAR 120,000 after approval. Ordinary application and service charges may also apply.

What This Route Allows
If granted, permanent residence lets you live, work, study, and carry out lawful business in South Africa, subject to the general law. Follow the permit conditions and the rules on long periods outside the country.
What This Route Is Not
The ZAR 12,000,000 figure is proof of wealth, not a donation or required property purchase. Approval is neither instant nor guaranteed, and submitting an application does not let you overstay your current permission. Citizenship has separate requirements.
The 2026 White Paper proposes changes, but a policy announcement does not itself replace the current category.
Next Steps
- Confirm the current section 27(f) requirements and the accountant's certification accepted for your records.
- Gather asset, debt, character, and personal evidence and apply through the correct channel.
- Keep your stay lawful while waiting. Pay the required amount after approval and follow the permanent-residence conditions.
